How blind persons are given instruction that enables them to obtain amateur radio operators' licenses will be described by a representative of Braille Institute when the Anaheim Amateur Radio association meets at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Meeting place is at 2660 West Broadway, Anaheim.
Speaker will be Bill Richardson, director of the Amateur Radio Club at Braille Institute, 741 No. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles. The club's call letters are WA6GLN. Richardson's own call letters are KCVVM. His home is in San Gabriel.
Richardson, who is legally blind himself, will bring to the club meeting brailed crystals and meters plus diagrams "written" in coated wire that fingertips can "read."
It takes a blind person longer to prepare for examinations for his novice and general licenses than a sighted person of equal intelligence. Richardson says, because of the difficulty in presenting formulas and diagrams. However, there are at least 100 blind operators in the Los Angeles area. The blind "ham" makes many friends through this medium, he adds.
Richarson has been with Braille Institute since 1956, first as a volunteer, then as a part-time staff instructor and, since October, 1961, as a full-time staff instructor.
He took up amateur radio as a hobby after failing vision forced retirement from his position as sales manager for a tool distributor. He has aided 10 blind students to obtain their operator's licenses in the past 10 years.
Braille Institute's services are all free to the blind and include much more than the radio club. Blind persons are taught to read and write in Braille; given instruction in cane travel and home and self care; offered a recreation program that supplies pleasant social contacts and crafts, music drama, creative writing, square dancing and bowling. Richardson reminds.
Anaheim Amatuer Radio Club members and guests will be invited to tour the Institute. Other organizations interested in obtaining speakers or arranging tours may call the Institute at Normandy 3-1111, Ext. 22. Braille Institute's speakers do not solicit funds. The Institute is supported by the public through donations, contributions and bequests in Wills.

The Melo-Larks will provide the opening for the talent contest, by giving the audience a lively and warm welcome to help pave the way for the contestants who follow.
