Nixon Slates Local Dinner Gubernatorial Candidate Richard M. Nixon will address a $50-A-Plate Campaign Fund Dinner on April 27 at Anaheim's Disneyland Hotel, Walter R. Schmid, chairman of the Orange County Nixon For Governor Committee announced today. "This will be another major appearance in Orange County by California's next governor," Schmid declared. He urged Nixon supporters to turn out in full force for the event which begins at 7 p.m. in the Disneyland Hotel's Embassy Room. Schmid said tickets for campaign dinner are available through the county Niagaraquarters office in Santa Ana (1905 N. Main St., KI 7-8418) and members of the county Nixon For Governor Committee. Vets Must File For Tax May 7 "Veterans of the county have until 5 p.m., Monday, May 7, to file claims for the annual $1,000 property tax exemption." It was stated today by Ben Liebermann, County Service Officer. Exemption requests must be renewed annually with the local assessor to insure continued eligibility for the exemption. Evidence of honorable discharge during wartime must be shown by veterans claiming the exemption for the first time. The $1,000 tax emptions are granted by the state to resident veterans, including women vet- GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS — Popsie, popular baby Indian elephant at Pacific Ocean Park, and starlet Dawn Wells share the joy of new Easter bonnets. Following the run of P.O.F.'s Teen Age Fair which climaxes on Easter Sunday, the Park will be open Saturday and Sunday only until the summer season starts in mid-June. Exemption requests must be renewed annually with the local assessor to insure continued eligibility for the exemption. Evidence of honorable discharge during wartime must be shown by veterans claiming the exemption for the first time. The $1,000 tax emptions are granted by the state to resident veterans, including women veterans, of wars and campaigns. Eligibility is limited to veterans who do not own property with an assessed value of $5,000 or more. However, under California Community Property Law, the veteran and the spouse together may own real and personal property up to an assessed value of $10,000 and retain eligibility. Labor Unions Lose Members in LA, LB Labor unions in the Los Angeles - Long Beach Metropolitan Area reported a net loss of 7,000 members between July 1960 and July 1961. On the later date, membership totaled 753,000. Declines associated with falling employment were reported in almost all manufacturing industries, for a net loss of 17,000 members. The biggest drops were in aircraft, metals and machinery, apparel, and furniture. Losses in manufacturing were partially offset by a gain of 10,-000 members in nonmanufacturing industries. Substantial union membership increases were recorded in government, wholesale and retail trade, construction, and motion picture production. Special Paper Dr. Kurt Bergel, professor of history and modern foreign languages at Chapman College, has been invited to present a paper on "The Significance of an Unpublished Play, 'Das Wort,' by Arthur Schnitzler" at the University of Kentucky April 27 during the university's Schnitzler Centennial Celebration. C. — Senator Clair Engle (D-Calif.) announced this week that he is co-authoring two new recreation bills—one to establish a $500 million Federal Land Conservation Fund, the other to set up a Federal recreation planning grant of $50 million for the states. The Senator said the Land Conservation Fund's key purpose would be the purchase of land for public outdoor recreation. The Fund would be financed, he said, by 1) proceeds from entrance, admission or user fees and charges at Federal recreation areas; 2) annual user charges on recreation boats; 3) diversion from the highway trust fund of refundable, but unclaimed taxes paid on gasoline used in motor boats; and 4) receipts from the sale of surplus Federal non-military lands. “In order to get the Land Conservation Fund going by next year,” Senator Engle said, “money will be advanced from the Treasury. This money will all be repaid back into the Treasury.” In the second bill—the proposed $50 million recreation planning program—the Federal government would provide matching funds to assist the states in researching their recreational needs. “This bill would help the states work closer together with the Federal recreational areas,” Senator Engle said. “What we want to do here is provide funds for developing ways the states, the Federal government and local and metropolitan areas can coordinate their recreational facilities.” The Senator said the bills stem from recommendations made by the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission, a bipartisan group organized in 1967. Committee on Interior and Inland Affairs the year ORRRC formed. “The Commission’s history work has been bipartisan,” said. “This legislation is part of the Administration’s aim of pleasing the Commission’s gestions.” Club Sponsors Work for Students The Orange District Federated Womens Club recently sponsored a contest of high school senior art work. The students submit a folio of their work and a statement of intent and future plans. The project was under the direction of Mrs. M. V. Stewart Yorbua Linda. Judges were M. Alpha Salveson, Anaheim, M.Jane Haden, Santa Ana, and Mton E. Hinshaw, Santa Ana. Winners were Bernard M. Jorr Jr., Garden Grove; Alex Garcia Santa Ana; Afdella Templet Garden Grove. Honorable mentions went to Al Tingle of Garde Grove. The winning folio and so work by the other winners will be shown at the Charles W. Boers Memorial Museum, 2002 Main St., Santa Ana, through April. Museum hours are: 10:40-10:30 weekdays except Monday Thursday evening 7 to 9; Sunday 1 to 5. There is no admission charge. A WOMAN'S WORK — City Clerk Dene Williams runs through the ballot and voting lists as a last minute check of voting results last week, following the April 19 city election.
