Great Western Savings, Santa Ana Savings Net earnings of Great Western Financial Corp. for the year ending Dec. 31, 1961, before appropriations to general reserves amounted to $13,898,738. Consolidated assets at the close of 1961 amounted to $1,010,452,729 as compared with $780,445,550 a year earlier, or an increase of $230,007,179 or 29 per cent. In reaching this total Great Western Financial became the first $1 billion savings and loan organization in the nation. Pierson said that this was the greatest dollar increase in assets shown by the seven association in the Great Western Financial Group in any single year since the corporation was formed in 1955. Sign Painter Billy Bletcher, who began his acting career in 1914 at the Vitagraph Studios in Brooklyn, was signed this week by Paramount for the role of a sign painter in "It's Only Money," starring Jerry Lewis. Pierson said that the increase savings during 1961 represent the greatest dollar gain for any year in the company's history obtained entirely from the opening of new accounts and through additions to existing ones. Total loans at year end amounted to $865,294,850 against $684,918,-958, an increase of $180,375,892 or 26 per cent. Pierson said that opportunities for the savings and loan industry in California today appear to be as great as at any time in the company's history. He said that the corporation has never been better equipped to take advantage of this potential.
