Top Bowlers to Open
Nation's Top Keglers Highlight Classic Open
Opening night bowlers signed to roll in the initial squad March 24 are literally a lineup of the leading bowlers in Southern California and the nation, it was announced by Maxie Kosof, director of the World Open Classic at La Habra "300" Bowl.
Among those featured in the opening squad are Dick Weber of St. Louis, national all-star champion; Buzz Fazio of Detroit, former captain of the famous Stroh's team and 1961 all-events champion of the World Open Classic; Marge Merrick, World's Invitational Women's match game champion; Janet Harman, 1961 World Open Classic women's singles champ and holder of the new all-events record for the Los Angeles Women's Bowling Association's city tournament; Wilma Guillory and Merle Matthews, Brunswick Advisory Staff stars.
Charles Wilkinson of Soledad, last year's World Open Classic singles champion, will also bowl in the opening squad.
Other first-nighters well-known in leading Southern California bowling leagues include: Howard Holmes, Jack Henry, John Krasnick, Bud Hodgson and Morrie Manalli, all of whom have been seen in television matches; Billy Maglione, Barney Pearson, Bob Pearson, Frank Stevens, Mel Buether, Jim Weaver, Butch Reddick, Al Tobes, Norm Belt and Hal Ambler, plus a squad including several winners of recent marathons at Southern California bowling centers.
Other leading women bowlers signed to bowl the first night include: Norma Pearson, Shirley Wernecke, Alice Mrak, Doris Rudell, Lorrie Rocka, Jane Randel, Lee Barnowsky, Diana Hayes, Marge Sammis, Stella Vingerelli, and Lorraine Garner, 1961 World Open Classic all-events champion.
Kosof said this is the first time in the history of bowling that a 64-bowler squad has been scheduled to bowl 20 consecutive games. In 1955, Kosof scheduled 40 bowlers to bowl 40 games in a row when his classic format was an endurance test.
Fazio has twice won Kosof's 40-game title and captured the 40-game all-events two times, giving him four wins in the past seven years.
With two sanctioned 300-rounds on the past month, the opening squad may shoot up a stagger but even if scores hold up entire 164-day run, bowlers have plenty of guaranteed money still to be captured.
There are 86 awards of each in the men's 20-games. Thirtieth in the men's game scratch event pays while 6th place in the men's handicap wins $1,000.
The tournament guarana total of $141,150. The World Classic features the longest down and richest payoff in sport competition.
Starting with the Men's opening, squads will be made every day for 164 consecutive through Labor Day, said K.
