SCREENING THE FILMS
If Geraldine Page wins the Academy Award for best actress for her role in "Summer and Smoke" she will have won it not only for her acting, which was superb, but also for looking the part.
A more typical spinster you couldn't find.
In fact, she was so completely old maidish it's a wonder Lawrence Harvey, playing opposite her, bothered to give her the time of day, much less try to seduce her in one frustrating scene.
The Tennessee Williams drama, with four Oscar nominations to its credit, is now making the rounds in theaters and drive-ins throughout the county.
Miss Page plays the daughter of a minister who is hopelessly in love with the boy next door, played by Harvey. The boy next door is a young doctor who allows his penchant for earthy pleasures to get in the way of practicing medicine.
The spinster spends a good part of the story in a futile effort to convince him that matters of the soul are more rewarding than matters of the body, and he makes one whole-hearted stab at convincing her otherwise in an incongruous scene in the woods.
Uma Merkel, nominated for best supporting actress, plays a realistic part as the spinster's demented mother. The picture is also up for best art direction and best music score.
Harvey, discarding his British accent for a southern drawl, is well suited to the part and in his big love scene, one sees that he has not yet seen it.
the award for the best supporting actor, a congressional investigation might be in order.
George C. Scott (the states attorney in Anatomy of A Murder) gave his usually excellent performance as the 'heavy'.
"The Hustler" is the story of a poolroom hustler who obsessed with the need to be the best pool player in the world. The picture, ultimately, revolves around his maneuvering to beat Minnesota Fats who is recognized as the best.
There is the usual moral in the story, but it would have fallen flat on its face had not Mr. S Laurie done such an excellent job.
The story had a weakness, of course, as do most Hollywood efforts. Newman could hardly pass for the typical poolroom hustler. For one thing, he had too many scruples and, for another, a little too much talent with the stick.
The typical poolroom hustler is interested primarily in the 'bread' he can beat the 'marks' for. Newman's goal was to be the best.
But all in all, it was one of the finest pictures we have seen at least this year.-rha.

Research Grant Awarded UCLA
Because of local donations to heart fund drives the Orange county Heart Assn. has been able award a $715 research grant to University of California, Los Angeles medical scientist to find out what effect cigarette smoking is on the blood circulation through the lungs, according to Thomas L. Channell of Santa Ana, resident of the association.
He said that Dr. John F. Murray, assistant professor of medicine at UCLA, is conducting a series of experiments designed to show if the blood vessels in the lung tighten up when subjected to cotine, and if so, how much.
one whole-hearted stab at convincing her otherwise in an incongruous scene in the woods.
Una Merkel, nominated for best supporting actress, plays a realistic part as the spinster's demi-fied mother. The picture is also up for best art direction and best music score.
Harvey, discarding his British accent for a southern drawl, is well suited to the part and in his big love scene, one sees that he has not lost his "Room at the Top" touch.
One can't help wishing, however, that the lady in his arms could be Simoné Signoret, but then she wouldn't have looked the part. — (DL)
"The Hustler" has been nominated for several academy awards. After seeing the picture last week and matching it against others I've seen recently, it should certainly take two and possibly three.
Paul Newman as "The Hustler" and Piper Laurie as his confused, alcoholic girl friend make me as convincing a pair as has come along for some time. And while Newman was little short of superb, Miss Laurie was magnificent.
Jackie Gleason as "Minnesota Fats" has a comparatively short role and didn't say more than 50 words during the entire picture, but if he does not come up with
