In Politics, You Can’t Tell Players WITH A Program!
By TOM McCANN
Hopefully, the most confusing political mish-mash to shape up in Orange County during the past decade will clear up between March 7 through 30.
These are the dates between which the real candidates can file nomination papers and clear the field of the "publicity hounds" and "joy-riders" who are making it difficult to tell the players—even with a program.
The coming June 5 primary election has flushed out more candidates and would-be candidates than any one person possibly could hope to catalogue.
What makes it even tougher is the fact that reapportionment of congressional and state assembly districts has created one more congressman's job and two more assembly posts than Orange Countians are used to filling.
Perhaps when some of the announced "candidates" learn that a $225 filing fee is charged when they turn in nomination papers and that assemblymen earn $500 per month the ranks will be thinned.
Let’s hope so, because voters in Orange County this year must select a United States senator, two congressmen, eight state officers (including a governor), three assemblymen, 23 county officials and city councilmen in several local towns.
It’s going to be a long list — even after the “real” candidates are selected.
We can't let this essay on California and Orange County politics end, however, without pointing out that much of time as a dare and have entered the various races just to flout the system in the faces of party leaders.
The result has been premature, expensive, overcrowded rush of campaigning which well may drown some of the best candidates from both parties in a sea of absolute confusion.
Assemblyman Richard T. Hanna D, Fullerton made a remark at the press conference in which he announced his candidacy for congress which will serve as a good springboard for this essay when he stated:
"I am running for congress instead of for the post of superintendent of public instruction (state office) particularly because it is within my reach financially."
Mr. Hanna went on to explain it less expensive to conduct a localized campaign for a national office (congress) than to conduct a statewide campaign for a California office (superintendent of instruction).
Mr. Hanna's figuring is correct.
But we will contend that political parties have brought it on themselves.
This year, through the Republican Central Committee's Candidate Research Committee and its Democratic counterpart, the Candidate Development Subcommittee, we have seen the ultimate in over-organization, premature campaigning (which costs money from the moment it starts) and more hats in the ring than one could believe.

It's going to be a long list — even after the "real" candidates are selected.
We can't let this essay on California and Orange County politics end, however, without pointing out that much of the confusion in the political arena is directly attributable to the political parties themselves.
Early in the game the Orange County Republican Central Committee announced it would form a Republican Candidate Research Committee to pass on its candidates in various districts.
The Orange County Democratic Central Committee countered with a Candidate Development Subcommittee.
Both of these groups, in effect, stamp the party's approval on the chosen candidate in each race in spite of loud, long disclaiming in which official party spokesmen insist no party endorsements will be given.
The effect, however, is that some publicity-seekers see a chance to "declare," later dropping out after not getting the candidate committees' nod, as they planned it to happen all along.
Other strong-headed, civic-minded citizens have taken the "selection" rou-
But we will contend that political parties have brought it on themselves.
This year, through the Republican Central Committee's Candidate Research Committee and its Democrat counterpart, the Candidate Development Subcommittee, we have seen the ultimate in over-organization, premature campaigning (which costs money from the moment it starts) and more hats in the ring than one could believe possible.
Besides the two quasi-official screening committees—one for each party—we also have groups not tied to any party, such as the Republican Men and the Conservative Coordinating Council, getting into the screening business and announcing their choices.
This backwards procedure of picking the winners even before the vote goes to the polls has resulted in probably the largest glut of candidates, would be candidates and publicity-seeker ever to confuse the local electorate.
Campaigning such as this is bound to be expensive. And, more than that, from where we sit it's going to be a peculiar collection of races in which the politicians will all be running backwards and fighting off fellow members of their parties harder than they are fighting their opponents.
The winner, running backward, will not win by a nose.

Fishing Site Now
Ready for Public
Newly dedicated and now open to free public use are the Aliso
Creek Beach coastal angling access facilities in South Laguna,
Orange County. The ocean front area involved was formerly accessible only by trespassing over private property. The new access site and its facilities were developed cooperatively by Orange County and California's Wildlife Conservation Board.
The site includes some 1,-100 feet of county-owned ocean frontage offering surf fishing and skin diving for lobsters and abalones. A public parking lot, restrooms, and fish cleaning facilities were constructed with $31,000 allotted to the project by the WCB from the state's share of parimutuel revenues from horseracing. The county will operate and maintain the facilities.

There is no precedent by which to judge, but if the nine-month stay Miller's Versatiles have enjoyed at the Charterhouse Mayan Room is not a record for the area, it must come pretty close.
And to anyone who has seen the easy going Todd Miller and Ernie Juneman, and listened to their many-faceted music, the reason for their lengthy stand is obvious.
Miller plays a variety of instruments, including drums, bongos, a horn, a banjo, a guitar and others
when the fancy or the mocalls for it.
Juneman is a maestro on piano and sings a fine German drinking song.
Both blend instruments vocal and comedy. But most the time they prefer to sing play. They give forth with a grade of American, continue and latin songs.
Miller is a veteran of show business and from a family of people.
His father headed a 14-band billed as Miller's Orcho
State Sets Week For Conservation
Pointing out that wise and considerate use of our natural resources is a necessity if we are to meet the needs of California's ever-increasing population, Director Walter T. Shannon of the Department of Fish and Game today urged youth groups and civic organizations to join in observance of the 28th annual California Conservation Week, which has been set for March 7-14.

billed as Miller's Orchestra.
Miller caught on as a tenor guitarist with the group, turning to the banjo and then to some blackface routines.
He has danced in New York and Los Angeles, acted in the 'Private Secretary' TV series with Ann Southern, and has had parts in various movies.
Juneman is formerly from Dusseldorf, Germany. He expects shortly to become an American citizen.
As a boy he pursued an education in music, eventually gaining a master's degree from the University of Hamburg. Although his training foundation in school was along classical lines, he always felt a fascination for American music and especially jazz.
Miller met the pianist in Europe and the two combined efforts to form the Versatiles.
Eventually, Juneman hopes to get his doctor's degree in music and concentrate on writing back-ground and soundtrack music for movies and television.
The Versatiles were recently chosen from among several groups to play before the 'top brass' of the Western Conference of National Musicians. This group included the presidents and top executives from unions in nine western states.
Miller said he felt this to be one of the top honors the Versatiles have received to date.
Miller said he and Juneman expect to be at the Charter house for an indefinite period.
