The cost of the addi- Elks Kickoff Most Valuable Student-Award Search Here The rae started last week for the Elk's Most Valuable Student Award with the goalposts holding total scholarship prizes of $110,000. Leading the team to a touchdown in the local contest will be William H. Currier, Exalted Ruler of Anaheim Elks Lodge No. 1345, coached by Henry Lorenz, contest chairman. On a national level there will be 142 prizes and the top award has been upped from $1400 to $1500. Locally, two cash prizes will be awarded: first place award, $80 and second place award, $23. The competition is open to any high school senior who is a citizen of the U.S. and a resident in the jurisdiction of any Elks lodge. The team line-up for the scholarships will be judged on scholastic achievement, citizenship, personality, leadership, pa-triotism, general worthiness and financial need. Applications have been mailed to the Anaheim high schools and the applicants should obtain endorsement of the Elks Lodge so that a completed contest brochure may be filed with the secretary of the state Elks association prior to the starting whistle of the last quarter — March 10, 1962. Ira Cook Pens Song At a press conference held today in the Music Library of Radio Station KMPC, disc jockey Ira Cook revealed he has taken a long and searching look at current music trends and then penned his latest song. It is aptly titled "Twist With Liszt," (Franz that is). Kuchel Gets 3 New Posts In a reorganization of the important Senate Appropriation Subcommittee to expedite handling of annual money bills, U. S. Senator Thomas H. Kuchel of Anaheim has been given three new assignments. The California lawmaker, who is assistant Republican leader now serves on the subcommittee on deficiencies and supplemental independent offices, interior department-forest service, legislative, military construction, a new treasury-post office-executive or five supply measures. Kuchel will be the ranking minority member on the military construction panel, which handles fund requests for the large number of defense installations in California and thus occupies strategic position to push several projects in which he is deeply interested. Among these are a new Naval hospital at Long Beach, a consolidated Armed Services hospital in March AFB near Riverside, and the Army Language School at Monterey. Concert Set By Chapman For Sunday The Chapman Symphony orchestra will present its free Winter Concert Sunday afternoon Feb. 25, at 4:30 in the Chapman College Auditorium. Dr. Ralph S. Smith, conductor of the college community, orchestra, has programmed two of the four works to feature Chapman's new Steinway concert grand piano, to be used for the first time in this program. Opening the program will be the "Barber of Seville" overture one of the most familiar and popular of Rossini's works. Rita Cohn, Mezzo-soprano, Edgar Sholund, pianist, will form Mozart's Concert Aria with the orchestra. Highlighting the second portion of the program will be Bacchus "Brandenburg" Concerto No. 1 with Phyllis Cole, flutist, Adrienne Holland, violinist, and Norman Thompson Jr., pianist. Mozart's "Magic Flute" orature will close the program. The Chapman Symphony orchestra, a community organization sponsored by Chapman lege, presents during each demic year a series of three free public concerts. Pretty Cleona Woodruff, youngest child of Lee and Anita Woodruff of Anaheim, reigned as Queen of the Horse Show. Cleona was stricken with polio when very young and continues to receive therapy from the Santa Ana March of Dimes Foundation. Captain Gene Thomas and men of the Sheriff's Reserve served breakfast. Continuous entertainment was provided by Eddie Cletro, his orchestra, Gail Moore at the organ, and the Barber Shop Quartette of Garden Grove. The World's Fair will cover 1200 acre site, primarily on broad land-fill pier, jutting a m into the Pacific Ocean at Long Beach Harbor. Construction of pier is just beginning, under direction of the Long Beach Harbor Department.
