An Economics Research survey confirmed what Anaheimers and Orange Countians have known for sometime.
Orange County — and Anaheim, as the hub — is the most important recreation center in the United States.
The survey disclosed that receipts from tourist attractions and amusement parks in the city and county "exceed those of each of the remaining 49 states and the combined 57 other counties in California."
Financed by Disneyland, the report was prepared on behalf of the Anaheim Visitors and Convention Bureau.
Among the most significant facts revealed in the report presented by the ERA survey group were these:
Recreational activities in Orange County generated annual revenue of total Orange County sales.
Recreation activities are more important to Orange County than to any of the major counties in California.
Orange County ranks with Los Angeles County, several counties on the eastern seacoast, and in Florida as "probably one of the seven or eight principal recreation centers for out of state visitors (tourists) in the United States."
Purpose of the ERA report was to define the economic impact of recreational facilities on the Greater Anaheim area (Buena Park, Garden Grove, and Anaheim), and on the county generally. The greater Anaheim area cities are recreationally effected primarily by Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm, which, the ERA report says, are "considered the two most successful out-of-town attractions."
The application period now open, continues until May 1 for composers and May 25 for all other contestants. Applications must be sent to Young Musicians Foundation, Box 49035, Los Angeles 49, according to Sylvia Kunin, executive vice president.
Regional auditions for Northern California take place June 8-9 in Steinway Hall of Sherman Clay Music Co., San Francisco. The Southern California regionals are set for June 15-16-17 in Schoenberg Hall, UCLA, Los Angeles.
Financed by Disneyland, the report was prepared on behalf of the Anaheim Visitors and Convention Bureau.
Among the most significant facts revealed in the report presented by the ERA survey group were these:
Recreational activities in Orange County generated annual retail and personal service sales of $158,000,000 — nearly 20 percent

Fred Krein Tells City Issue Views
Fred T. Krein, former manager of the Anaheim Dixie Cup plant, became the second of local candidates for city Council seats at the forthcoming city elections to release a written statement outlining his stand on local issues.
Krein, now retired, lives at 72 Janss.
Incumbent Mayor A. J. Schutte gave his statement two weeks ago. Councilman Joe Fry has indicated that he will give a similar statement shortly.
"Anaheim City Government is big business—I feel my experience as a business executive and my interest in civic affairs, as indicated by my record, makes me qualified as a candidate for the office of councilman.
"I was instrumental in bringing the Dixie Cup plant to Anaheim and was general manager of Dixie Cup's West Coast operations beginning in 1945, when I moved to California from Chicago. I was employed by Dixie Cup for 38 years in various capacities.
"I have spent six years as a director of the Chamber of Commerce and one year as president of that body. I have been on the board of directors for the YMCA, United Fund and Red Cross and was general chairman of the United Fund Drive.
"In 1961, I was a member of the Orange County Grand Jury and am at present a member of the Citizen's Advisory Council of Anaheim Memorial Hospital."

In 1960 sales generated by tourism, this was the "new dollar" impact of visitors on each city in the Greater Anaheim area, through recreation spending:
Anaheim, $46 million, or $411 for each household in the city; Buena Park, $21 million, or $438 for each household; and Garden Grove, $14 million, or $152 for each household.
Other areas of Orange County also benefited substantially from recreation spending, as follows: Santa Ana, $21 million; the Beach
This indicates that recreation dollars generate a substantial part of total sales made in Orange County, regardless of product line," the survey continued.
This opinion was based on ERA's finding that Orange County leads the other 14 major California counties in percentage increase of retail and personal service sales during the summer months.
In 1960, for example, third quarter (summer) sales exceeded the first quarter by 129 per cent for retail sales, and 126-per-cent in personal service sales.
In pointing out recreations impact on other businesses, the report states that in 1960, the summertime increase in woman's apparel sales in Los Angeles County and California generally was up 5 per cent; in Orange County they were up 52 per cent. In sporting goods, the rest of the state increased 20 per cent during the summer, while Orange County was up 75 per cent.
From expenditures by tourists (and recreation employees) in 1960, general merchandise stores in the greater Anaheim area received $7.3 million, apparel stores $5.2 million, other retail outlets $5.2 million, home furnishings and supplies $3.8 million, eating and beverage places $11.6 million and hotels and motels $8 million.
Recreation facilities pay property taxes now amounting to $5 million annually, according to the survey, and are instrumental in collecting nearly a million in sales taxes which are returned to the cities by the state.
In concluding its report, Economics Research Associates pointed out: "The recreation facilities in this area have developed a worldwide image as the gay holiday center of America — which has been often translated into images of a pleasant place to live, to build a business and to relocate industry."

Park Commission To Meet County Sites Tomorrow
State Park Commission's calls for additional state acreage along the Orange coast and the development of those areas with more dog and picnicking sites will beailed Friday.
Animation will be made at regular meeting of the commission to be held in the Little River of the Santa Ana Senior School. The presentation date is at 10 a.m.
Regulations are expected to represent the Board of Assessors and councils of the cities, as well as conservation shoreline preservation. The State Park Commission was asked that all express views on the program.
The $13 million in projects is included: senior acquisition on San Creek near Doheny Beach Park as well as properties on Dana Point. These will provide 750 to 1,000 campsites as well as opening new beach areas. Present facilities at Doheny have been overcrowded for many years.
Acquisition of properties immediately south of San Clemente Beach State Park, involving an estimated $4,500,000 in addition to the acquisition. This would provide camping for 550 units, provide parking for not less than 2,000 cars, and extend for considerable distance the beach properties.
Development of Bolsa Chica, enabling its use by not less than two million persons annually. Included is acquisition of the Pacific Electric right of way. No construction development plan will be presented graphically but the division anticipates outlining its hopes. Further construction and development of the day use area at Huntington Beach State Park, including the tie-in with the free-way which will be immediately east of the park.
Study of possible sites on the proposed en route camps on the 'Route of the Padres.' This is a series of camps for single night overnight use extending from San Juan Capistrano to Sonoma along El Camino Real.
The regular commission meeting will begin at 9 a.m. but the special hearing on Orange County is set for 10 a.m. The Commission will tour the Orange County beach parks today starting at San Clemente.
