SIDELIGHTS Build Up Your Brain with Yoga By DORIS LEE Yoga is gradually taking over as the best means of exercising to keep fit. Or to become fit if you're not already fit. And Yoga offers more than the conventional one-two, one-two type of exercising offers. It not only tones and firms your muscles but also tones and firms your brain, liver, gall bladder and lungs. It makes you beautiful, vital and happy. (it doesn't make you intelligent.) The principle behind all this is the "Life-Force" that's tucked away inside you just waiting to be tapped. This is a miraculous power to recondition the body and it only needs to be activated by Yoga to give you all the things you want. Besides the regular muscle-building routines, all done in slow motion, Yoga offers a new way to breathe (abdomen out, chest expanded, shoulders raised), and a new way to pray, sitting in a Lotus position with legs looped like a pretzel. Slow and Easy. Being a rather indolent type, I find the slow stretch and hold method in Yoga just my dish of yogurt. And I can do nearly all the exercises perfectly including the shoulder stand. ing on my back with my fingers on my solar plexus, and inhaling and exhaling is a snap. But the white light escapes me completely. You're supposed to concentrate carefully to picture it. All I can conjure up is a picture of my fingers clutching at my solar plexus. They say it takes practice. Once I thought I saw a little jagged shaft enter my left ring finger, but when I transferred to my head nothing happened. Another time I thought a white light was flooding my whole scalp, but it turned out somebody had walked by and stepped on my hair. It produced anything but tranquility and calmness. Love Everybody Another mental movement I have trouble with is the Positive Thought Projection whereby you sit in the Lotus position, close your eyes and send out positive thoughts of harmony and peace throughout the whole world. It's a kind of sharing period. The idea of sharing my good thoughts with all humanity appeals to me greatly. I'm very friendly. It begins fine. I'm sitting there radiating good will and thinking, "Hello, out there in California and the whole United States, and all you Canadians, and South Americans, and all you Rec. Dept. Being a rather indolent type, I find the slow stretch and hold method in Yoga just my dish of yogurt. And I can do nearly all the exercises perfectly including the shoulder stand. I can even do the abdominal movement, which is a sucking in and snapping out of the abdomen. And incidently, there's a trick to it. Simply exhale all your breath and hold it before sucking in. It's guaranteed to glue your navel to your spine. But I tend to have trouble with the mental exercises, one in particular, called "Directing the Life-Force." For it you lie on your back, eyes closed, with fingertips on the solar plexus. Then you inhale and visualize a white light being drawn from the solar plexus into the fingertips, carrying the white light, to the forehead and exhale while visualizing the white light flowing into the head. The purpose of it is to gain tranquility and calmness by directing energy from the solar plexus to the head or wherever it's needed. ANC Progress Reported By Pac. Phone More than 10,000 new all-number telephone prefixes have been installed in Orange County since the gradual switch to "All-Number Calling" was initiated two months ago, it was announced today by Pacific Telephone district manager H. R. Heth. The ANC system eliminates the familiar two-letter prefix name system in favor of two numerals. About 130,000 of the 340,000 telephones in the county are expected to be converted during the year. Seven-numeral numbers are assigned to new residents, or to those requiring a number change on their service. Those who had service installed prior to last Dec. 15 will not have their number affected until late 1964. "Approximately 500 ANC numbers are installed each day in Orange County," said Heth. "The change is vital — if we didn't go to the all-numerical system the nationwide demand for telephones would possibly exceed the number combinations available within 15 years." He explained that the program is part of a nationwide conversion to ANC. Under the new system. National automotive trade journal writers, the metropolitan press of Los Angeles and local reporters visited the Anaheim Delco-Remy battery plant last week. Purpose of the plant tour, which followed a luncheon and press conference at Disneyland Hotel, was to call attention to the 50th anniversary of the use of storage batteries in the automotive industry. Bob Daily, manger of the plant located at 1201 N. Magnolia Ave., Anaheim, presided at the press conference and hosted the plant tour. Top brass of the Delco-Remy Division, Anderson, Ind., and General Motors, Delco's parent corporation, attended the event, Speed Reading At Servite High Set Limited enrollments are being accepted at Servite High School, 1952 W. La Palma, Anaheim, for a special co-educational course in Speed Reading for adults and children, beginning shortly. Father Leonard M. Mazurk, principal has announced. School officials pointed out the necessity for improved reading techniques in view of high academic requirements at Southern California colleges in citing reasons for offering the special course which produces from 300 to 1,000 per cent increase in speed with superior comprehension, conducted by the Dan-Ro System. Dan Rosenwasser, originator of the record-breaking system which guarantees results, said the course will include a specialized device which trains each student to recognize wider groups of numbers, phrases and sentences at speeds up to a hundredth of a second. "We take in smog geles air and purify it lowing it to be circula ange County," he told The local plant was Anaheim in 1958. Under the new system, numbers directly replace letters in the telephone prefix. For example, PRospect 2-6543 has been changed to 772-6543. Since the dial openings used are the same for both the letters and numerals, dialing techniques remain unchanged. Heth pointed out that in addition to meeting the growing demand for more telephones, a big advantage of the change to ANC will be the elimination of confusion between the letter "T" and the numeral "one" and the letter "O" and the numeral "zero" while dialing. OC Leads Other Gas Co. Areas Orange County again led all other areas served by Southern Counties Gas Co., in number of new customers added during 1961, it was announced last week by gas company Orange County division manager Justin M. Kennedy. During the year just past, Kennedy said, the Orange County division of Southern Counties added a net total of 17,880 active meters — representing new gas customers — to its lines. This gain of more than 8.5 per cent over year-end 1960 figures was the largest numerically of any registered by Southern Counties' eight operating divisions. Dan Rosenwasser, originator of the record-breaking system which guarantees results, said the course will include a specialized device which trains each student to recognize wider groups of numbers, phrases and sentences at speeds up to a hundredth of a second. Well, here's the answer. The country is divided into telephone areas—each has a different number called an "AREA CODE". This code is a vital part of your telephone number—it tells what part of the country you live in. You don't have to use an area code if you're calling a telephone number located in the same code area as yours. But when you dial another area, it's necessary to dial that area code—then the rest of the number. Our operators too must dial area codes. If you place a call with the operator, giving her the area code first will help in putting your call through faster. UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT — Dr. George H.
