Life Is On Cas By DORIS LEE The truth is finally out. Jacki isn't the impeccably groomed First Lady she appears to be. A Glen Ora she's a slob. A friend of hers (some friend) recited this tidbit to Newsweek magazine recently. "She loves being in old clothes and she loves having her hair sloppy," says this friend. "When she's in the country, you get the feeling that she hasn't looked at a mirror for five hours." I'm glad to hear this. I don't go to the country for my casual living but I do like to relax some around the house. (A lot of housewives do.) And I hardly look at a mirror either when I'm away from the public eye. In fact, I relax better if I turn them all to the wall. I usually wear my old velvettee capris, the ones with no velveteen on the knees and seat, and my faded blue sweater with the three missing buttons. I leave my hair kind of wild with just a hair clip or two to keep it out of my eyes. Commune with Nature In this attire (or condition) I relax. I eat lunch informally in the living room with my thong clad feet up on the coffee table and I go for long walks around the backyard, where, although I am not much of a gardener, I'll occasionally pull up a weed on two and prod the ground with my index finger to get the feel of the earth. It usually leaves me tired. Tire Retreading 8 HOUR SERVICE All Work Guaranteed Shinkev-Pearson 630 W. Karcher, head of the California Committee for Water Conservation. The Anaheim City Council has recently passed a resolution backing the 100 per cent metering of all water connections in the county. A continuing campaign to get support from cities and counties to curb any water waste will be given great emphasis, and a direct appeal to all water users to curb any unnecessary use will be made. Karcher, who serves as vice-president of the Pacific Water Company, will carry the story up into the Central Valley and to Sacramento in the very near future. Although there has been some rain this season it could still be a hard day for water conservation efforts. The Pacific Telephone Company I've seen a number of articles lately on how to improve one's reading speed. Now that's something our Information operators are very interested in. So they can give you quick, accurate information, they've taken company Rapid Reading courses, use special indexes and cross references. Three years ago, the average time spent on a request for a telephone number was thirteen seconds longer than it is today. Learning to cut down the time it takes to give you the information you want has also made the job easier for our operators. This is another important way we have found to help give you better telephone service. Unusual uses for telephone books. One of the telephone companies received an order from a South American fruit company for 800 telephone books—Yellow Pages and all. Turned out they were to bullet-proof a truck against bandits! It figures—when you need help, you'll find it fast in the Yellow Pages! Pacific Telephone LIFE IS Hard On Casual Type By DORIS LEE truth is finally out. "And that old blouse!" "It won't show I'm going to button the sweater all the way down." "Button it! Whoever heard of buttoning a sweater?" she explained as she rummaged through my closet. "Here, wear this black blouse with your red sweater." "Will you please tell me," I asked as I changed, "why we have buttons and corresponding buttonholes on our sweaters if they're not for buttoning?" "Don't ask me," she said. "I don't make the rules. There has been some discussion about whether it would carry the story up Central Valley and into the very near future. 'Many Moons' Set For Jan. 27 For the third Production in the Children's Theatre Series the Anaheim Senators Thomas H. Kuchel and Clair Engle in a joint letter last week told Chairman Anderson of the Senate Interior and Insular Affairs Committee they completely approve the agreement between the Federal Government and the State of California for joint construction and use of the $400,000,000 San Luis water project on the West side of San Joaquin Valley. The two Californiaans asked that the pact, which has been submitted for committee review before any funds are spent on construction, be allowed to go into effect in order to provide for urgent extension of the Federal Central Valley Project and to bring to realization the State Water Plan for transporting Feather River water to heavily-populated Southern California. The Kuchel-Engle letter noted that "the cooperative project is an integral part" of both Federal and State developments designed to overcome California's acute water shortages. The law authorizing the San Luis project specified that an agreement between the United States and California must be reached by January 1, 1962 but no Federal money might be spent for construction until the contract had been before the interior and Insular Affairs Committee of both branches of Congress for 90 days and not dispassioned by a resolution of either Committee. Kuchel and Engle pointed out that $500,000 was voted at the last session of Congress and is available for construction while California "is prepared to advance its funds as needed." For some months, California has been making contributions toward advanced engineering and design and has initiated land purchases for this project. This agreement, in the view of the Senators from California, appropriate, legally sound, and fair to both the State and the Federal Governments," the two California lawmakers wrote the Interior Committee Chairman. "We want the agreement to be come effective and believe should not be disapproved by your committee." "The cleaner, the cooler" is good rule for "dog" days. McGrew. McGrew also charged Hanna as accepting the chance to run for Congress as a 'reluctant last choice' for the Assemblyman since he obviously preferred and was waiting for another Brown-dicated job." McGrew predicted the gerrymander accomplished by the Brown-Hanna team will haunt the Democratic candidate. "Naturally a reasonable political advantage is a fact of life for the party in control in Sacramento. Unfortunately this effort to promote a 'sure thing' shows great irresponsibility. Placentia, Fullerton, La Habra, Santa Ana, Garden Grove, Stanton and Los Alamitos have been divided into two different assembly districts and Anaheim into all three. 'This was unnecessary at a time when the cities need and deserve to be united to face growth problems. I think our Assembly-man has proven he is first an opportunistic politician and second a statesman. The Congress doesn't need any increase in such individuals,' McGrew said. California indicated in a recent poll that they could no longer support Mr. Brown, this represented an indirect reaction to Mr. Hanna, a leading Brown lieutenant," McGrew said. He further reported that it is still not clear just why Hanna, as chairman of the assembly committee on education sat on 10 legislative measures intended to strengthen internal security. McGrew forecast that the coming campaign will be a real struggle and Hanna's entry into the fray adds further interest. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub., Anaheim Gazette Jan. 11 & 18, 1962.)
