10 Buck Bargain Is Now Million Dollar Rec Park If the calendar were suddenly turned back to the year 1911 and the City of Anaheim could see into the future, the city, together with its recreation department, could not have made a better purchase. It was on Nov. 23rd of that same year that an 8.7 acre parcel of land was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Jayne. The total purchase price was ten dollars. Today, the value of this property is $150,000. This saving of $149.990 means a great deal to the taxpayer, as this land will have an important role in this expanding city. In April of next year the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department expects to have this land, to be used as a neighborhood park, ready for public use. The location is the northwest corner of Crone and Loara. The importance of recreation for all age groups is recognized not only in Anaheim, but across the nation — President Kennedy is one of the many leaders of our country who has stated this many times. Up until recently the city has derived a small revenue from the orange trees planted here. $15,000 was spent on the future park. This included approximately 2,200 cubic yards of fill dirt, part of which was donated by residents (swimming pool excavations). Within this same expenditure was the grading of the area, perhaps the most important element in the development of a park. Rounding out the $15,000 expenditure was a sprinkling system. A sprinkling system for such an area includes such things as: a 4 inch water meter with 4 inch check and shut off valves as well as 4 inch cast iron pipe fittings; three and a half miles of pipe, not to mention sprinkler heads, control valves, and so forth. According to Dick Kamphefner, Park Development Coordinator, "When the park opens this spring, it will include such things as a picnic area, archery range, landscaping, concrete walks, picnic tables and barbeque braziers. The ball diamond will be complete with backstop and bleachers. There will be drinking fountains lighting of children's play area for evening use and installation of creative play equipment." Funds acquired in the next year will provide bicycle racks. The importance of recreation for all age groups is recognized not only in Anaheim, but across the nation — President Kennedy is one of the many leaders of our country who has stated this many times. Up until recently the city has derived a small revenue from the orange trees planted here. This ended when 'quick decline' attacked the plantings. During the late spring and summer of this year, approximately Orange County Ranks 2nd In S. California Bond Sales Orange County ranked second, percent-wise, among the 11 Southern California counties in bond sales for the period January through November according to the U. S. Treasury Department, Savings Bonds Division. The county had a 15.7 percent increase for a comparative period last year. They were second only to San Luis Obispo's 22.5 increase. A total of $3,833,189 worth of Savings Bonds have been sold in the county as of the last of November. In a county-by-county listing, United States Savings Bonds sales for the January through November period in Southern California edged up 1.7 per cent over the same period of a year ago and included six strong "gain" counties. Sales for all of Southern California were more than a million dollars higher for November of this year than for November of 1960. William H. Neal, National Director of the Treasury's Savings Bonds Division, commented that gross redemptions nationally were $4,141 million for the first 11 months, 11 per cent under last year and the lowest in seven years. He said he predicted "record sales of H Bonds next year because of raising the purchase limit from $10,000 to $20,000, effective January 1." FHA Spurs Orange County Real Estate Sales During Past Year Real estate sales in Orange County have increased at a tremendous rate of volume since FHA lowered interest, down payment and maximum maturity requirements, according to Don Gorley, business development manager, Investor's Mortgage Service Co. Affecting thousands of residential properties, FHA interest rates dropped to 5% per cent last month and continued. Construction has gone to 35 and 40 years at FA's discretion. As a result of the new activity, sales forces have been expanded and a number of new companies have been developed in Orange County areas, Gorley reported. The demand results from increased population, which has been growing rapidly, he declared. Real estate sales in Orange County have increased at a tremendous rate of volume since FHA lowered interest, down payment and maximum maturity requirements, according to Don Gorley, business development manager, Investor's Mortgage Service Co. Affecting thousands of residential properties, FHA interest rates dropped to 5½ per cent last May and recently down payment requirements dropped from 3 per cent of the first $13,500 to 3 per cent of the first $15,000, Gorley said. Maximum maturity on new construction has gone to 35 and 40 years at FA's discretion. As a result of the new activity, sales forces have been expanded and a number of new companies have been developed in Orange County areas, Gorley reported. The demand results from increased population, which has been growing rapidly, he declared. Gorley said that from his survey of new business, it appears that the winter months of 1962 will be considerably above last year. Watch the Classified Columns. Self-Service Laundries Serve As Social Centers High on the list of spots for socializing is, of all places, the self-service laundry. While the wash is swirling through the suds, the owners have a wonderful opportunity to relax and chat with neighbors and friends. In fact, even some customers who own automatic washers prefer using "coin-ops" to working alone at home. Although the facilities change with the times, folks are just as gregarious now as when they met to pound their laundry over rocks in the village stream! HEIM GAZETTE ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Thursday, December 28, 1961 OC Ag Service Top Geis UC Man The University of California has appointed Dr. Falah K. Aljibury, 28, an irrigation and soils specialist, to the Orange County staff of the Agricultural Extension Service. In making this announcement, County Director J. J. Coony stated that the assignment of a man with Aljibury's qualifications will assure an intensification of the water use studies and educational programs begun by his predecessor, Dwight C. Baier. The new farm advisor is a native of Iraq, formerly Mesopotamia, one of the oldest irrigated land areas in the history of agriculture. Aljibury, who recently returned from a trip to Iraq, says that soil and water management practices play an important role in irrigated agriculture all over the world. All farmers are concerned with soil conditions, salinity, fertility and irrigation practices. He adds that while research has helped solve a number of problems, many problems remain, especially in the field of water management. Some are of an immediate concern to the people of Orange County.
