ANAHEIM MEMORIES 83 Years Ago, November, 1878 ESCUELO ESPANOL Prof. G. G. Cavallero will open a Spanish and English school in Anaheim about the first of December. The professor is a thoroughly competent teacher as is attested by the success of his classes at Westminster and Garden Grove, where he has been for some time. He was formerly a translator for Gov. McCormick of Arizona. It is seldom that an opportunity is presented to place one's self under so able a teacher. TURKEY ON CUE A number of fat turkeys were raffled at Martin Classen's saloon on Tuesday night, and much amusement was had. At Granet and Wenger's sample rooms Wednesday night the champion cue was won at pool by Wm. Trash of Santa Ana. Numerous turkeys were also played for. The firm spread an elegant lunch. LAND BOOM Nearly every day this week parties passed through Anaheim on their way to the Santa Margarita ranch in San Diego county, to settle on the land which Don Juan Forster has put upon the market. From one of these parties we learned the terms upon which the land is offered. Each farmer is given 160 acres rent free for the first year: The second year he pays a rental of $1.50 per acre or one-sixth of whatever crops he may raise; the third year he pays $2.50 per acre rental or gives one-fifth of his crop; or if he so desires he can purchase the land for $10 per acre. RUSTIC'S RETURN Fred Lengenberger has returned from Santiago canyon where he has been rusticating for the past month. 58 Years Ago, November, 1903 WEISEL'S DEISEL Peter Weisel informs us he has ridden upwards of 4000 miles in his automobile, and it is still as good as new. The horse reporter enjoyed a spin about town in it the other day and will never be happy again until he gets one of his own or can borrow Peter's at frequent intervals. Peter is coming to be a chauffeur from away back. HAVE AND APPLE, JACK Napoleon Hart advertises that he has just received from a bonded warehouse in Kentucky 16 barrels of apple jack, one barrel being of the age of 22 years, having been placed in the warehouse in 1881. It is the largest consignment ever imported into the county. JOURNEY FROM YORBA D. C. Sanchez of Yorba, one of the highly respected residents of the up-river valley, was in town on Tuesday on a short business visit. Mr. Sanchez, in speaking of the rainfall, says there is plenty of time yet for precipitation to begin, and that years will begin late and keep it as the most productive prosperous. He looks for rains the coming g. FIRST CLASS NO. Al Smith was a business in town on Tuesday and walnuts yielding better had supposed at the end of the harvest. Brown today called attention to the traditional observance of a bountiful harvest and the imminence of Thanksgiving Day by proclaiming November as "CARE month" in the State of California. "It is the month," said the Governor, "when we celebrate thanks for a bountiful harvest. Our surplus food," he added, "also represents a challenge, and the challenge is to share our gifts with those in the world not so lucky. Through its $1.00 package of surplus food for overseas distribution, CARE, in its new Food Crusade, presents a unique way every citizen can meet the challenge of helping the world's starving peoples." R. J. Noble of the R. J. Noble Co., general contracting firm of Orange, is in charge of the program for this area. The plan, developed by Associated General Contractors, covers the 11 southern counties of California. This total area has been divided into seven districts with Orange County established as one of the seven. Operation Bulldozer Known as "Operation Bulldozer," the program will make available to civil defense authorities more than 50,000 pieces of equipment whenever a state of emergency is declared to exist and when the extent of the emergency exceeds the ability of public facilities to handle the situation. According to Noble, a volunteer staff of construction industry executives is now at work tabulating the various types of equipment owned by general contractors that would be required for disaster relief. Records are being kept of the exact area in which each piece of machinery is located. Similar records are being developed of manpower required to supervise relief work and to operate the equipment. In the event of disasters "Operation Bulldozer" staff will be able to advise authorities exactly what equipment is available at it is." Noble said. "Equipment needed by authorities for rescue preservation of life and will be dispatched from est available point. Under the provisions of the California Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 81 of 1955, each State Senator and each Assemblyman representing an evennumbered district may nominate a young man from his district for admission to the Academy in 1962. Since the number who can be admitted to the Academy each year is limited, this method of selection assures statewide opportunity to gain admission to the Academy and to prepare for positions of leadership in the Maritime industry which is so vital to California. The State-operated California Maritime Academy is located in Vallejo at the head of San Francisco Bay.
