Perhaps for the first time, he tree silhouetted by the moon-catches a glimmering of nature's splendor. It's a clean, wonderful world here at the 7,000-ft. level in the San Bernardino mountains. The exhilaration of the community sing around a campfire has captured him and he whistles a tune as he turns in. Soon he is fast asleep, for the schedule of swimming, hiking, crafts and study at Camp Osceola leaves an energetic nine-year-old ready to recharge his batteries when bedtime comes. The boy has something in common with more than 1,800 other youngsters in Anaheim, Cypress, Dairyland, Los Alamitos, Rossmor and Stanton who participated this summer in the Anaheim YMCA camping program. And the YMCA, in turn has something in common with 14 other agencies supported by the Anaheim-Western Communities. United Fund drive now in progress. All 15 United Fund agencies are dependent on generous contributions to the current drive that will finance services like giving the nine-year-old camper an environment where delinquency doesn't sprout. The Anaheim YMCA is bustling with a wide-range of activities in which more than 4,000 persons are participating. Notwithstanding its name, the Young Men's Christian Assn. now offers programs for girls and adults as well as boys. Building strong bodies is traditionally one of the YMCA's responsibilities. The organization founded in 1844 and established in Anaheim in the early 20s, gave the nation the sports of basketball and volleyball. In addition to this emphasis on physical fitness, however, one purpose dominates all YMCA activity: building character. The boy or girl at camp or in club meetings is encouraged to grapple with such questions as "What are my major problems in getting along with others?" He writes and discusses them with his friends. "We feel you have more than provide a ground to solve juvenile delinquency," says William Poirier, YMCA general secretary. More than 1,000 boys girls six to eleven years old participated this summer.
