Millions Will Welcome Knight Entry in Race
Former Gov. Goodwin Knight should be congratulated for his decision to enter the gubernatorial race.
In his own words Knight spells it out well and concisely:
"I'm just trying to clear the air so all candidates know where I stand. Many people have asked me to clarify my position."
To Knight we say, its time the "air is cleared."
For the first time it gives the California electorate an opportunity to decide on a candidate instead of the "myth of Nixon leadership."
Knight brings into the California governor's race many years of experience. He served as a judge for 12 years and was lieutenant governor for seven years. He served more than five years as governor.

Knight can be praised for bringing to California state government a staff of outstanding men, many of whom are still serving the state faithfully.
Knight's decision comes at an apt time. It will give many of the now registered Democrats an opportunity to change their registration to support him in the coming primary. To win he must have that Democratic support.
Unless Knight gets this registration change Nixon could be the Republican candidate to oppose Governor Brown in the general election.
We think Knight has a good chance. Many Republicans agree with us but also are of the firm opinion that Nixon cannot defeat Brown.
Dick Nixon's statement that if he had to run to save the State, he'd do so, is just ridiculous. The indispensable man does not exist!
ANAHEIM COMMENT
DIFFERENT THEN
Times have really changed, especially if you consider Anaheim will spend $15 million this coming year to keep its municipal government operating.
But back in 1911, things were different. Minutes of the sleepy little village's board of trustees.
especially if you consider Anaheim will spend $15 million this coming year to keep its municipal government operating.
But back in 1911, things were different. Minutes of the sleepy little village's board of trustees reveal these items of city government:
On April 27, 1911, Engineer Lewis asked the board for a wrench with a "wider band." He needed it to enable him to open new fire hydrants on West Broadway. He was permitted to spend funds for the wrench.
On June 22, 1911, the superintendent of streets was instructed to notify Carl Martin to move his barn within his property line. It apparently was jutting into the alley south of Center St. The barn interfered with traffic.
On July 13, 1911, Marshal Kellenberger informed trustees that motorcyclists, a new breed of daredevil in those days, could be hired at 75 cents an hour plus gasoline to arrest auto speeders on Anaheim.

Knight to Speak Here; Enters Election Race
Former Gov. Goodwin J. Knight will address the completion ceremony conducted by the Round Table of Orange County Joint Labor and Management Committees at Disneyland Hotel Saturday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m.
This will be Knight's first major appearance here since he announced his candidacy this week for the California governorship.

City Schools Share in Bank Savings Program
Anaheim schools this week share in an historic occasion: the Golden Jubilee of Bank of America's school savings program founded in California by A. P. Giannini in 1911.
In honor of the 50th anniversary, Governor Edmund G. Brown in a formal declaration commended the program and said:
"I urge California to join in observing September as School Savings Month."

Knight announced his candidacy, raising the possibility of a showdown political fight with Richard M. Nixon if the ex-vice president chooses to run.
Knight, 64, and white-haired, said at a news conference that he was in the race "all the way" and "absolutely" would not pull out even if Nixon decide to run.
In 1958, Knight yielded to party pressure and withdrew from the governor's race in favor of then U.S. Sen. William F. Knowland. Knight ran instead for U.S. Senator against Democrat Clair Engle. Both Knowland and Knight were defeated.
Some GOP leaders feel Nixon should opt out the race because he would stay in the public eye if he wins and wouldn't be leader of a large prestigious state. Others fear that if he runs and is defeated, he would be washed up as a national political figure.
Knight, who appears regularly as commentator on a local TV current events show, said in his announcement: "We should beware of political joyriders and cross-country hitchhikers who may be looking for a free ride at public expense."
He denied he was referring to Nixon, saving he meant politicians who repeatedly enter races for publicity without any programs.
He acknowledged Nixon as the GOP's "titular leader" in California. He said that when
