Member, California Newspaper Publishers Association EDITORIAL BEST GOP TEAM Proof that some top state GOP ears continue to "sit in their ivory towers" and fail to come up with real "grassroots opinions" became a reality this week. State publishers meeting for the smaller newspapers last week heard definite proof, despite a poll of top GOP leaders that former Gov. Knight and former Lt. Gov. Harold "Butch" Powers are favorites over Richard Nixon as the most popular ticket in the coming California governor's race. Making the report was Marion Walker, publisher of the Red Bluff Daily News. He started out to take inventory of U. S. Senator Clair Engle's popularity on the local level. While talking to many of the state's newspaper editors he found that the Knight-Powers ticket seemed the most popular from the GOP standpoint. top GOP leaders that former Gov. Knight and former Lt. Gov. Harold "Butch" Powers are favorites over Richard Nixon as the most popular ticket in the coming California governor's race. Making the report was Marion Walker, publisher of the Reo Bluff Daily News. He started out to take inventory of U.S. Senator Clair Engle's popularity on the local level. While talking to many of the state's newspaper editors he found that the Knight-Powers ticket seemed the most popular from the GOP standpoint. The informal survey also found that in the opinion of these editors Nixon could not beat Gov. Brown in the coming election. The editors readily admitted that the Department of Motor Vehicle Chief Robert McCarthy's resignation hurt Brown last week. But even with this "so-called" split in the Democratic party Nixon still appeared a loser if he decides to run next fall. Much has been said about the survey of top GOP leaders last week which favored a Nixon ticket. According to John Krehbiel, state GOP chairman, 972 ballots received so far from the upper echelon GOP favored Nixon with 687 votes. We would be the last ones in the world to try to "out guess" these top GOP political leaders. But it has been proved rather conclusively in the past that newspaper editors in the small towns around California sometimes are in better touch with the people than the party hierarchy. Our suggestion is that some of these leaders take time out to talk to the man in the street. They might even read their newspapers a little more closely to determine that Nixon may not be the answer to the GOP's "dream" in California. There is, however, some hope for the GOP. A grassroots poll of more than 75,000 volunteer workers throughout California's 58 counties is being mailed this week in an effort to get some more nationwide feeling on top GOP candidates for governor. We predict that former Gov. Knight will give Nixon some real competition on this poll. And he could even very likely reflect the feeling of the many of the state's newspaper editors as revealed this week. LA PALMA at BUCLID, AMAHAMIA Prospect 2-1617 Letters to the Editor Mr Sir: We would like to use this news of complimenting publy the Fox Theater in Analan for the presentation of the Star-Spangled Banner" are the features. It is beaufully done, with pictorial acpaniment. We don't know if the same feedre is followed in Santa and Fullerton, but we cerly hope so! Very truly yours, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Walker Mr Sir: Just off the corner of Ball and Magnolia in our city using a new high school. The closed name for this school Magnolia High School. Some time ago I wrote our for Mr. Schutte and SenaThomas Kuchel sounding out on having the name changed to Alan E. Shepard High School. I think the city could well use the publicity and dignity that would go with naming the school after our first astronaut. The name Magnolia High School would of course be fine except that the Alan E. Shepard name is better. Our mayor has not seen fit to answer my letter but Senator Kuchel replied Saturday. The senator things the name Shepard High is excellent, and has plenty of merit. He suggests I contact the city editors, school officials and Superintendent of Schools. He also asks that I keep him informed of the progress and the decision that is made. I have talked to many of my customers. I am the assistant manager of the Alpha Beta Market next to the new school, and they overwhelmingly think a change is due. Some suggest a petition of names. I disagree as time is too short. Some of the further thoughts on the name Alen E. Shepard High School is as follows: 1. The school's athletic teams could be named the "Astronauts" or "Commanders" (in honor of his feat or rank. 2. A science plaque or award to be made annually to the Senior Science student who achieves the highest scholastic awards or marks in science. 3. One of my favorite people and customers is Mattie Lou Maxwell. You must know a school here in West Anaheim is named after her. She also wrote Senator Kuchel asking his help, she thinks the naming of the new school for America's newest hero is just fine. Also on our side is Lydia Denny of the Magnolia School District. These and many more people think it's time for a step forward in Anaheim. A thiiis could once again make other Orange County citizens of our city. I woulu hear your views on idea. Let's get on the band. Mr. Editor—let's move thi forward—let's name thi school for all American envy. Thank you, Richard A.
