Student Returns From Girls State
Recently returning from California Girls' State is pretty 17-year-old Julie Deck of Western High School.
Sponsored by the Anaheim Legion, 492 representatives gathered from throughout the state at the University of California at Davis, California for eight days of strenuous, rewarding participation in democracy. The girls were housed in the brand new dormitories on the campus and they enjoyed excellent meals in a new cafeteria.
Miss Deck, who was sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary No. 710, was Sergeant of Arms of her "city," a member of California Girls' State Horse Racing Commission. She was also a candidate for Lt. Governor. Julie felt that declaring her candidacy, taking out, circulating and filing her petition were the most difficult tasks in the campaign. However, she found the experience of living in such a democratic atmosphere where they made their own rules and governed themselves. Citizenship and the mechanics of government were well presented by the American Legion and well absorbed by the Girrls' Staters.
Julie is a senior at Western High School where she is a Silhouette drill team leader for the coming year. She also participates in many school and community activities. Julie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Deck, 2803 W. Academy Ave. in Anaheim.

The OCC nursing program is accredited by the California State Board of Nurse Examiners.

However, she found the experience of campaigning and petitioning in the formal and legal manner most rewarding.
During the first part of the week the girls were divided into fifteen cities to elect city officials. The newly elected mayor and council reviewed ordinances suggested by city members and passed several of them. The cities were each members of one of the five counties. County meetings were held, county officials were elected, and county ordinances were passed.

POLYJOTS
A Saturday Evening Post cover came to life last Sunday when a man in white slacks and red yachting cap was seen walking briskly along the side of the road, a plastic surfboard under his arm. Down the road a piece a car pulling a boat was parked and its three occupants were standing beside it peering anxiously up the road at the hurrying yachtsman.
The word hush puppy, in case you've been dying to know, originated in the south when leftover corn meal patties were fed to the howling hunting dogs to "hush the puppies."
No wonder women outlive men. When a crisis arises, they go to pieces like they're supposed to. But not men. They calmly reach for a cigarette and quietly force the panic down into their stomach where if turns into an ulcer.

Zoo Draws Stork,
OC Visitors Too
There is no stork in the collection of animals at Prentice Park, Santa Ana, but one makes frequent visits there. Like the people who live on the outside, the zoo inhabitants are having a population explosion. And it seems to be concentrated among those animals closest in relation to man. In the past several months there have been six baby monkeys born—two rhesus, two spider, and two capuchin. Also the zoo boasts a one-year-old gibbon and down the path is a baboon about the same age.
There are other sources of stock for the popular zoo. The California Fish Commission.
PBX Club Formed—In Anaheim
The PBX Club of Anaheim is the new name chosen by the North Orange County PBX group to conform to the constitution of the International PBX Clubs which requires the use of the name of a city.
Mrs. Alberta Hackler, new president of the group, announces that during the coming year, special attention will be given to helping PBX operators and their employees solve problems having to do with telephone usage and service.
To start off this program, a film from Pacific Telephone entitled "Manner of Speaking" will be shown by Mrs. Vesta Woods, service adviser for the Telephone Company, at the club's first regular meeting for its new year. There will be a question and answer period following the film.
All PBX operators in North Orange County are cordially invited to visit the club at this meeting which will be held at the Waterwheel Restaurant in Anaheim social hour 6:45 p.m.
