Member, California Newspaper Publishers Association NO RIGHT TO TREASON It was not surprising that certain elements protested the United States Supreme Court's recent two-prong blow at communism on the grounds that it restrains freedom of expression and association. Some people will never learn—or admit—that communism is a conspiracy to overthrow our government, and that adherence to its precepts is close to treason. We commend Justice Felix Frankfurter for his succinct defense of the Court's decisions. He pointed out that Congress, by detailed investigation, had established that the Soviet Union had set up Communist movements in other countries "to bring about the overthrow of existing governments by force if need be and to establish totalitarian dictatorships subservient to that foreign government." It is ridiculous to say that active membership in such a party is protected by constitutional provisions for freedom of expression and association. Furthermore, as Justice Frankfurter declared, the Court's decision on communist activity in no way implies the future imposition of restrictions upon any group which pursues unpopular political objectives. "Unpopular" and "treasonable" are quite different words. True Americans, from the ADA to the John Birch foreign government." It is ridiculous to say that active membership in such a party is protected by constitutional provisions for freedom of expression and association. Furthermore, as Justice Frankfurter declared, the Court's decision on communist activity in no way implies the future imposition of restrictions upon any group which pursues unpopular political objectives. "Unpopular" and "treasonable" are quite different words. True Americans, from the ADA to the John Birchers, need not worry. They still are free to argue their beliefs. Last week I joined with others of my colleagues in introducing a joint resolution expressing a declaration of war against the 98 communist parties which constitute the international communist conspiracy which is irrevocably committed to the dictatorial enslavement of every man, woman, and child. These 98 communist parties are directed and controlled from the Kremlin. This international conspiracy is the most formidable foe which this country and the Free World has ever faced. We have declared war upon lesser foes in the past; why should we hesitate to declare that a state of war exists and then proceed with every weapon at our command, both military and political, to the goal of total victory so that the blessings of freedom, hope, and spiritual satisfaction may be the heritage of all mankind. This cannot be accomplished without such a declaration of war. Under this declaration, where a state of war exists, agents of the international conspiracy could be prosecuted for treason. Propaganda of the conspiracy could be confiscated and the purveyors of this propaganda could be prosecuted, just as Axis Sally and Tokyo Rose were prosecuted for their Schwegman Announces Candidacy Merlin D. Schwegman, Buena Park industrial engineer and poultry farmer, has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Congress in the newly created 34th Congressional District. Schwegman, father of six children ranging in age from three to 14, is 44. This is his first bid for a political office: A native of Nebraska and a graduate of the University of Nebraska, he has been a resident of Southern California for 19 years. His political philosophy is based on the precent of less government and more individual responsibility. Schwegman stated that the intent of his candidacy was to be sure that the Republicans had a candidate who would continue to represent the conservative viewpoint which Congressman Utt has so capably This cannot be accomplished without such a declaration of war. Under this declaration, where a state of war exists, agents of the international conspiracy could be prosecuted for treason. Propaganda of the conspiracy could be confiscated and the purveyors of this propaganda could be prosecuted, just as Axis Sally and Tokyo Rose were prosecuted for their propaganda in World War II. We are spending more than $40 billion per year on military armaments to meet a war which I hope will never be fought. Russia has been restrained from military action directly against America, simply because of fear of massive military retaliation. NECESSARY MATERIAL Because plaster can do so many things so much better than anything else it is the one building material that has been used throughout the ages in every country on the globe and in every climate, according to the Southern California Plastering Institute. It is as much at home on the fringes of the Arctic Circle as it is in the tropics, as indispensable in great public buildings as it is in any well-built home, no matter how modest, whether the style of architecture be traditional or ultramodern. Scholarships Set By Begonia Group College scholarships for Orange County high school graduates interested in pursuing study in horticulture or related fields in agriculture will be awarded for the first time this year by the Orange County Branch of the American Begonia Society following their annual show at Orange County Fairgrounds, August 12-13. "As far as we know," stated Dr. Robert D. Rhodes, president of the local society, "no garden club is now providing such scholarships to students in any of California's agricultural colleges." Proceeds of the annual shade plant shows will henceforth be used for this purpose. Admission to the show and to all displays will be free. Folk Music Is Concert Theme Contemporary folk music will be featured at the 7th Under the Stars" concert at Pearson Park Greek Theatre this Friday, at 8 p.m. Heading the list of contemporary folk singers will be Kathie Taylor, a Capitol Recording artist who has appeared on many local and national television shows. Sharon Ford, of Anaheim, and Ann Richards, of Fullerton, am as balladeers and specialize in new sounds in modern folk singing. Denny Brooks, one of the most popular and talented entertainers in Southern California, will complete the bill for the evening. These young artists are heard each Friday and Saturday evening at an Orange non-alcoholic night spot called the Moni Ami. The musical series has been part of the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department's summer program and is planned entertainment for the entire family free of charge. The last in the concert series will be the Anaheim Symphony Orchestra which will appear Friday evening, August 18, at 8 p.m. OCC Dental Lab Showing Progress Work is progressing on the new dental assisting laboratory at Orange Coast College and students are now registering for the program, according to Mrs. Mary Jean Misener, director.
