STAMP OUT THE REPUBLIC?
It begins to look as if the Kennedy administration had as they say in some circles, a thing about the words "republic" and "republican," even with a lower-case "r."
Not long ago, Postmaster General Day yelled for Congressional protection against postage-metered motions which read: "This is a Republic, not a Democracy — let's keep it that way." Now, we are informed by the Publication Human Events, the manufacturers of postage meter machines and plates have rejected the request of a North Carolina milling firm to imprint their envelopes with the pledge of allegiance to the flag.
As we all know, the pledge begins: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands."
There's THAT WORD again!
We can't pretend to know the meter manufacturer's reason for such a decision, but since postage is a federal prerogative, a fairly obvious inference could be made. So, in deference to a Party that won the White House by a margin a couple of Chicago aldermen could pick up on an off afternoon, let us join in a reunion.

So, in deference to a Party that won the White House by a margin a couple of Chicago aldermen could pick up on an off afternoon, let us join in a rousing chorus of "Battle Hymn of the Democracy."
DANGER AT HOME
The American Medical Association News points out that "seemingly innocent objects can be hazardous to very small children." It quotes a Public Health Service report on 5,605 drownings that occurred in a recent year. Three-fifths of those thus killed were less than five years old. A number of them were drowned in 5-gallon cans, buckets and crocks.
In sum, home can be a mighty hazardous place for small fry—and constant precaution is essential.
REA Files to Merge Operations in County
As part of a nationwide modernization program designed to modernize and improve its service to the public and to eliminate serious deficits which threaten its continued operations, R E A Express has filed an application with the Public Utilities Commission of California for authority to consolidate its operations at Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Irvine, Laguna Beach and Orange in one key office at Santa Ana.
Direct pickup and delivery service will be provided from this key office to the communities of Anaheim, Atwood, Brea, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, El Toro Air Station, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Irvine, Laguna Beach, La Mirada, Newport Beach, Olive, Orange, South Laguna, Stanton, Tustin and Westminster.
R E A Express cites that many of the offices which it proposes to consolidate in this area, and in other areas throughout the state, were an inheritance from Wells Fargo and the "Horse and Buggy Days" when these offices were necessary because there were no highways and few streets. In this by-gone era the express office was located at the rail-

REA Express cites that many of the offices which it proposes to consolidate in this area, and in other areas throughout the state, were an inheritance from Wells Fargo and the "Horse and Buggy Days" when these offices were necessary because there were no highways and few streets. In this by-gone era the express office was located at the railroad station which was the hub of the community. Present day freeways, and modes of travel, make these many small offices unnecessary.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
The Editor:
Juvenile drinking is very much in the Juvenile drinking is re- decidedly on the in- At San Francisco, the order of teenagers booked intoxication has increased cent since 1959. Norbest Key, Alcoholic Beverage Supervisor, reports drinking by minors is 78.7 percent beer; 16.4 per cent spirits; 4.9 per cent After juvenile beach, the beaches are so freed with beer cans that authorities, as at Santa are considering ordi- to prohibit drinking at beaches. So notorious are school parties, at which has resulted in brawls, authorities of Lowell High at San Francisco, citing "intoxication" and "misbehavior," disclaimed all responsibility for private parties being staged this year by the graduating class, in motels and hotels. (San Francisco papers for May 9.)
Stepping up to Congress, Senator Olin D. Johnson of South Carolina protests, "Wine flows so freely at Washington cocktail parties that it is a wonder that every Senator and Representative isn't teetering on the brink of alcoholism." Senator Johnson is demanding that intoxicants for parties given by American representatives abroad no longer be allowed in their budgets.
Peter Loustaunou, Secretary of the Pacific Telephone Employees' Benefit Committee, states that 2,000,000 highly skilled drinking-problem workers cost United States industry $1,000,000,000 a year. Experts are agreed there are now in the United States 5,100,000 alcoholics.
Dr. Robert Felix, Chief of the National Institute of Mental Health, announces a new attack on alcoholism will be based at Stanford University, with $1,100,000 made available for the purpose.
The late John Francis Neylan, viewing a San Francisco night club filled with men and women in various stages of intoxication, commented:
"Twenty years from now, the men and women in there will be dead or on relief. Those who will be supporting the survivors are at home in bed."
In a strong plea for outlawing the traffic in intoxicants, the late Rev. Father M. J. Whyte, then pastor of St. Marin's Parish of Sunnyvale, clared:
America sober is A free. But America drunk America in chains, though armies march in triumph the earth, and her navies over the seas."
Sincerely,
FRANKLIN HICHE
