LAW IN ACTION THE CLERGY AND THE LAW Clergymen have many privileges under our law. Going back for centuries, some of them guarantee religious freedom, others encourage a worthy vocation. Long ago at early common law the clergy had many privileges. For, as they said "to disturb the preacher is to disturb God." Some of these privileges still exist: 1. If a clergyman learns things during a confession, he may keep them secret. No court can force him to talk about them. 2. Clergy do not have to serve in the military nor do jury duty. 3. The clergy may convey ideas from the pulpit, and they may also take people to task. Statements that might be slanderous for others to say may be privileged, unless prompted by malice. Courts often say that the church must speak out on many things. 4. A clergyman often counsels troubled family members and, as a rule, has broad privileges to give advice without having someone charge him with interference and meddling. 5. The church often adds members who "belong" to rival groups. No lawsuit can result from switches in membership. 6. For ages religious homes, hospitals, and other charities were immune from suit for harm they may have caused their beneficiaries. But not since 1951. Boys' camp registrations for the July 22-27 younger boys' College Votes To End Courses Following further study on the continuation of eight adult education courses at Orange Coast College next year, the board of trustees reaffirmed its decision to discontinue the courses. The board was asked to reconsider dropping knitting and weaving when a group of 19 adult students of the two courses visited the June 12 board meeting. Decision to drop the eight courses is the result of insufficient funds to offer all the courses the college would like to offer to meet community needs, lack of facilities to accommodate all courses and state legislative criticism over junior colleges offering non-college level courses. The board also stated that it might consider dropping in the future any other adult education courses which do not merit state aid.
