ANAHEIM COMMENT
RAISES FOR WHOM?
Somehow everyone seems to be getting a raise this summer.
That's one good thing about the fiscal year which ended July 1. All the government agencies sit down and figure out budgets for the coming year.
Not only do government workers get pay hikes but it seems homeowners do, too—in the form of higher taxes.
The most noticeable may be the county tax levy of $1.59 per $100 of assessed valuation.
Taxpayers will probably get a definite answer on this matter today when the county fi-

The most noticeable may be the county tax levy of $1.59 per $100 of assessed valuation.
Taxpayers will probably get a definite answer on this matter today when the county finance director's office makes its report to the board of supervisors.
Despite promises from supervisors pledging to "hold the line," it looks like an increase of two or three cents if next year's spending program is approved.
One of the issues is the supervisors' sudden interest in mechanical voting machines. These are estimated to cost $2 million and would increase the tax rate more if purchased.
This definitely would be another raise—in more ways than one.
Most important, from supervisors' standpoint, is that machines reportedly will speed up the county vote count. In this way supervisors can see themselves getting re-elected faster and earlier on election day in Orange County.
Not that they don't deserve re-election if voters see fit, but what difference does it make (Continued on Page 4-A)

High School District Votes Tax Increase
Anaheim Union High School District trustees have approved an 11-cent per $100 of assessed valuation tax increase for the next year.
Cost of high school education in this city will rise from $1.39 to $1.50 per $100 of assessed valuation.
Included in the hike is $200 across the board pay raise for district teachers. Pay of principals will go up in accord with the teacher pay hike.
Attempts to slice down the $9,859,156 tentative budget for the new fiscal year include slashing of or positions of cafeteria managers, vocation agriculture and other courses.
City Workers Win Raises
A straight five per cent across the board wage increase for 750 full-time Anaheim city employees has approval of the City Council today.
Two positions, that of city clerk and public works directors, received additional increases.
City Clerk Dene Williams received 17½ per cent raise and Thornton Piersall received a 10 per cent increase.
Total for the raises will run approximately $250,000 annually. Increases began July 1.

Later that evening the former governor extolled the community for its effort and congratulated them for "bringing back an old-fashioned type Independence Day celebration."
Knight made the comments on his twice-nightly TV show he conducts on Channel 13 as a news commentator. Knight said 600,000 view the program nightly.
The day's events included crowning of a queen, baseball games and group singing.
Knight pointed out that once Orange County used to be known for its citrus tree. "Now, it's known for its people," he declared.
He commended veterans' organizations for their work in decorating La Palma stadium and for putting on the event.
In future years this event should become one of the most widely known and loved celebrations in the county," Knight stated.
Knight, when asked about his plans on running for governor in 1962, remained quiet on the subject. He did, however, say that he has a luncheon meeting set up with former Vice President Richard Nixon later that month.
And you know when old politicians get together there'a lots of talk." Knight added while hinting there might be an announcement following the meeting.
Also featured at the event was former State Sen. Nelson Dilworth.
