ANAHEIM AND ITS TEXTBOOK OKS Residents of late have taken a great interest in textbooks being provided in the local school districts. Several proposed texts were recently held off the adopted list by the high school board after residents burned charges of "leftist" and "pinkism." We think this is their right although there seems to be some question about it among school board members and administrators. Anaheim residents should be more seriously concerned about the State Legislature's failure to adopt proposed constitutional amendment giving local boards just a little more freedom in the choice of textbooks. Matters would have had the opportunity to decide whether local boards could choose from among a group of books selected by the State Board of Education. The local boards would still be limited to those picked by the state. What should concern residents most is even though they select school board members, the state still has the final say on textbooks used in local school districts. WAS BEN SUBVERSIVE? The master General J. Edward Day recently became very exercised when he found that some people WAS BEN SUBVERSIVE? Most master General J. Edward Day recently became very exercised when he found that some people were metering their postage with the words: "This is a Republic, not a democracy—Let's keep it that way." This, cried Mr. Day, is subversive. "It's out and out again Birchish!" Mr. Day should read the Constitution. It says: "The United States shall guarantee to every state a Republican form of government." Nowhere does it refer to democracy. Most of us understand we have a representative form of government, not direct government by the crowds. Evidently, not Mr. Day. For some reason he thinks "representative" and "Republican" are dirty words. As to "keeping it that way," Ben Franklin is said to have replied to a question as to what form of government the Constitutional convention of 1787 had provided: "A Republic, if you can keep it that way." Does that, Mr. Day, make old Ben a subversive? Festival to Have 'Anaheim Night' Tonight has been designated as "Anaheim Night" at the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach. A special block of tickets will be held at the box office for Anaheim orders. Eugene Ober is this year's Festival musical conductor and "Anaheim Night" is a tribute to him and Anaheim. Those planning to attend in a group should contact Mrs. Sun. Reservations may be made by calling HY 4-1147. Ticket prices range from $3.50 to $1.50. Performance of "The Pageant of the Masters" starts at 8:30 and a wrap is suggested. SELL IT. Gazzete Want Ada. are you looking for FRIENDLY SERVICE? you'll find it at...
