Peek Family Expands Career Scholarships Great interest in the Peek Family Scholarship for careers in government service has resulted in expanding to three the number of awards, Lon E. Peek said today. An outstanding student from each of three Orange County junior colleges who is interested in public administration, government service or political science will receive a $500 scholarship award at commencement exercises in June. Originally the scholarship had been limited to only one student among the three colleges. Applicants from Fullerton, Orange Coast and Santa Ana colleges will be narrowed to two from each school by the faculty committees. The resulting six candidates will be interviewed May 25 by members of the Peek Family advisory board who will select the three winners. This board consists of Harry Buffum, Santa Ana; Walter Knott, Buena Park; H. Louis Lake, Garden Grove; Charles Pearson, Anaheim, and Willis H. Warner, Huntington Beach. Object of the three scholarship awards, an annual renewable program, is to "strengthen and preserve American democracy by encouraging intelligent, educated youth to seek careers in government," according to Peek. District Gets Federal Aid According to an announcement by Congressman James B. Utt (R-28th Dist.), Magnolia School District has been awarded the sum of $39,383 for school operating funds pursuant to Public Law 874. Schools which are heavily burdened by the impact of Federal installations in their area are eligible for financial assistance under this Public Law. It belongs to Western Electric, the manufacturing branch of the Bell System, and the rocks produced are quartz crystals. Thin slices of quartz crystal are used in several types of telephone equipment. While there's lots of natural quartz in the world, big crystals that can be sliced are scarce and expensive. To get around this, Western Electric is using a unique process to "grow" large crystals from small, inexpensive pieces of quartz. The man-made crystals (above) cost a lot less than large, natural ones. And because they are more evenly shaped, twice as many usable slices can be cut from them. So Carol has to keep up-to-date on the latest changes. Each morning, Carol and our other Information Operators get a complete list of all the new phone numbers. In this way, "Information" is able to give you the number of a new phone installed as recently as the afternoon of the previous day. Pacific Telephone LULAC Leader Hits Furore in ACLU Dispute A ranking LULAC official has sharply criticized the current furore concerning some LULAC members and the American Civil Liberties Union. "LULAC has no quarrel with the ACLU" as far as I know," stated Andrew Fuller, district director for the eastern Los Angeles County region. "I feel the members who have criticized the ACLU are stepping out of bounds. I want it known that these members do not speak for LULAC." It was announced that a group of LULAC members and leaders have joined in a statement protesting "trends that threaten the life of our organization," evidently referring to the Orange County controversy. "We are firmly against such un-American forces as Communism and Fascism. At the same time, we are against those who create suspicion and dissension by making accusations without evidence or even a good reason. We must strongly protest efforts by LULAC to judge other civic groups."
