County Solon Reports Move To Stop Hoffa
A move in the state legislature to oppose Teamster chief James Hoffa's proposal in Congress to force railroads to boost their freight rates to shippers was developing this week with strong backing.
State Senator John A. Murdy Jr., of Orange County, said a joint resolution calling on California congressmen to help defeat two U.S. Senate bills introduced at the request of Hoffa's powerful teamsters' union is now pending in the state senate.
Specifically, the legislature would ask opposition to U.S. Senate bills 1089 and 1197, "to the end that competition in transportation rates may be preserved." The proposal is in the form of Joint Resolution 39 (Collier).
The Hoffa-sponsored bills seek to force the railroads to hike their rates for piggyback freight, or flat car, transportation to a level commensurate with truck rates.
This would prove "a detriment to California agriculture and the lumber industry," Murdy said.
"The rates of a carrier should not be held up to a particular level to protect the traffic of any other mode of transportation."
Hoffa's union, in effect, is asking Congress to repeal the Transportation Act of 1958 which enabled railroads to cut rates and benefitted the consumer and the California shipper." Murdy said.

OC Music Society' Plans New Season
"Plans have just now fallen into place which will make the Orange County Philharmonic Society's 1961-62 season the finest ever," announced Robert Guggenheim at a recent meeting of the continuance fund committee at the Guggenheim home in Corona del Mar.
Guggenheim, who heads the continuance fund drive which will be launched this Tuesday, told committee members of the purpose of the fund. "It will assure Orange Countians of superb music heard within minutes of the home. Most important, it will fully support the Concerts for Youth which will again be given throughout the county at no charge," he explained.
CTA Survey
Nearly 94 per cent of all California high school classes are taught by teachers who completed a collegiate major or minor concentration in the subject, according to a study released today by the California Teachers Association.
Though mis-assignment of teachers poorly prepared in subject matter has been charged nationally, the CTA study revealed that this is not a major school problem in California.
Anaheim Girl Named Queen For Convention
Tall, auburn-haired Sylvia Lopez of Anaheim has been chosen Queen of the California League of United Latin American Citizens, it was announced today by Danny Olivas of Placeia, state LULAC director.
Miss Lopez, an Anaheim Union High School junior and the candidate of the Anaheim LULAC council, was chosen from a field of six for her (5'8") tall beauty and her efforts on behalf of the state-wide LULAC convention which will be held May 6-7 in Anaheim.
As Queen, Miss Louez will preside over the convention social activities and take part with her court in the dinner dance at which Governor Brown is the featured speaker.
Miss Lopez' brown eyes were all aglow when she heard of her victory. "As a member of Junior LULAC," she said, "I'm very proud to represent the organization at the convention."
Besides a variety of school activities, she pays careful attention to clothes; her hope is to become a dress designer after graduation.
