Western Sports Review The Pioneer mermen swamped the Oilers in all divisions with 58-27 in the Varsity, 47-30 in the Bees and 43-34 in the Cees. Varsity Vaults Over Oilers Ralph Cooper, Charles Johnson, Bob Hipp and Fred Stellhorn started the Pioneer varsity off by clubbing Huntington Beach in the medley relay with a time of 1:20.2. Russel Almond baffled the Pearson Heads Fund Group Charles A. Pearson, local business man and civic leader, has accepted chairmanship of the Citizens Advisory Committee of the Anaheim United Fund, it was announced. News of Pearson's acceptance followed a luncheon at the Gourmet Restaurant, where top volunteer officials of the Fund were in attendance. Plans were formulated by the group for holding a meeting in early May for the purpose of selecting key leadership for the 1961-62 United Fund Campaign. "With the rapid growth of our city and surrounding area, Oilers in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:17.0. Cooper copped the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:07.2. Stellhorn suak Huntington Beach in the diving event with a score of 231.5 points. Dallas Baker, Dale McNeely, Hipp and Stellhorn romped past the Oilers in the freestyle relay with a time of 1:09.2. Bees Bomb Beach Garold Myers, Bobby Perez, Chris English and Larry Metzler moved past the Oilers in the medley relay with a time of 1:25.8. Mike Dufour drowned all opponents in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.8. David Albright eluded Huntington Beach in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:07.2. Richard Foster fouled up the Oilers with a time of 1:23.6 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Cres Confuse Oilers Bill Nelson, Gene Kural, John Orr and Mike Anderson dumped the Oilers in the freestyle relay with a time of 1:16.9. Douglas Phillips, Nelson, Kural and Orr distressed Huntington Beach in the medley relay with a time of 1:27.9. Phillips was timed at 30.0 for the winning time in the 50-yard butterfly. MURDY, State Senator There are a lot of rumors ling about reapportionment after what we can gather here in Sacramento, things about to pop. For one thing, we hear that reapportionment bill or bid will hit the floor of the legislature by the end of this month. And the way it looks now Orange County will get one more Assembly seat for total of 3½ Congressional seats, the other one-half in San Diego County. The new Congressional District will probably coyer much the same area as the present 75th Assembly District, represented by Assemblyman Richard T. Hanna, a Democrat from Fullerton. Here are some other interesting facts on the subject: Four Assemblymen flew Washington, D.C., a few days ago. They admitted they were going to explain to California Congressmen the boundaries of the new Congressional Districts. The four were Assemblyman Bill Grant (R), Jer Unruh (D), Charles Conn (R) and Robert Crown (D). There's some talk about creating the membership of School Annual Staff Picked The 1961 Pioneer Annual has been completed by the Western High School staff that has worked busily since September of last year. Under the editorship of Connie Jump and the guidance of the faculty advisor, Donald Kleinsmith, the staff has produced the largest annual ever developed at Western. The annuals are a new 9 by 12 size. It has a raised cover and many of the photographs will be in color. Highlighting this year's annual is the selection of "Patti and Paul Pioneer." "Patti and Paul" are the most outstanding senior boy and girl, selected from a poll taken in November in the Senior Problems Classes. From 12 finalists the final selection will be made and kept secret until the annual is given to the general student body. These finalists are: Terrie Burnett, Judy Elmore, Cecil Hardesty (Ph.D.), S. Diego County Superintendent of Schools, is the first to announce he will seek Dr. R. Simpson's post as State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Dr. Hardesty once served as superintendent of the Westminster School District in Oran County after migrating from Wyoming in 1933. City Baseball Play to Start Baseball tournaments sponsored by the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department are scheduled to run through May 11. The tournaments will be divided into four leagues: Church, City, Industrial, and Service. All tournaments are scheduled on the Roosevelt, Maxwell, Pearson and Lincoln Park diamonds. The tournaments will be held on Mondays through Thursdays with two games being played each evening. These games will begin at 7 and 8:45 p.m. This is a closed league, open only to those leagues being sponsored by the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department. Orange Coast The annual is the selection of "Patti and Paul Pioneer." Ceremony The Tri-Y-Ans of Western High School were recently inducted into Sigma Iota at a ceremony held in La Palma Park. Sigma Iota was initiated this year by Nan Moore, Anaheim Y girls' secretary, as a social influence club to promote Christian living. As members of Sigma Iota the Tri-Y-Ans are required to maintain high moral standards and endeavor to build strong Christian character, not only in themselves but in others around them. The Tri-Y-Ans is the first high school club to be given the opportunity to become a member of Sigma Iota. The tournaments will be held on Mondays through Thursdays with two games being played each evening. These games will begin at 7 and 8:45 p.m. This is a closed league, open only to those leagues being sponsored by the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department. Orange Coast Slates Concert Orange Coast College's first full length concert will be given by the music department Friday, May 5, at 8 p.m., according to Paul Cox and John Brimhall, music instructors. The concert will be free to members of this community and will give the audience an opportunity to hear instrumental and vocal groups perform in a concert situation with emphasis on different types of music, according to the directors. The symphonic dance band and all choral groups will participate in the program which will feature varied music. Speaker Named Samuel B. Gould, chancellor of the University of California at Santa Barbara, will deliver the second annual commencement address at Orange County State College. Fullerton, exercises on June 11, according to President William B. Langsdorf. The program is scheduled for 5 p.m. on the college athletic field following baccalaureate service at 3 p.m. and a reception at 4 p.m. Dr. Norman Davidson, chemistry professor at the California Institute of Technology, has accepted the invitation to address the Awards Assembly for the sixth annual Orange County Science Fair at Santa Anita College on Wednesday, May 11. It was announced today by Lloyd Smith, chairman of the fair. Dr. Davidson will be the third Cal Tech professor to appear for the science students having followed Dr. Thomas Beadle, recently named chair of the University of Chicago cage, and Dr. Allan Hibbs, an executive scientist in the Joint Propulsion Laboratory. Dr. Davidson will speak on "Nucleic Acids, the Molecular of Heredity." The assembly at 6:30 p.m. in Phillips Hall on the Don campus will be open to all exhibitors in the fair and feature presentation of $50 bonds to the two sweepstakes winners; $25 bonds to the 18 section winners, medal-plaques to all first place winner, and ribbons to other winners.
