Los Alamitos Season
Now in Full Swing
Two big red horses, one hardly out of the diaper stage and the other a grizzled veteran, are expected to make the 25-day Los Alamitos spring meeting at nearby Los Alamitos Race Course one of the brightest in recent years.
The meeting opened Monday and continues through May 8 and both Tonto Bars Hank and Vandy's Flash are expected to see action during the very first week of racing. Vandy's Flash is the grizzled veteran, a giant gelded chestnut son of Vandy, who set two world records last year to be named horse of the year.
The youngster is Tonto Bars Hank, the strapping chestnut colt owned by Milo and C. G. Whitecomb, who with $93,862 in the bank, is the richest quarter horse of all time. And he earned this amount last year as a 2-year-old and was named 1960's top 2-year-old and top stallion.
Pancho, as wizened trainer Pat Simpson calls him, is not only the richest, he is also the second fastest quarter horse of all time. While Flash has run the 350 yards in 17.3 seconds, Tonto Bars Hank has come closest with 17.6.
Tonto Bars Hank is slated to see action in the $5000 Shue Fly Stakes opening day, while Vandy's Flash will go postward the first Saturday of the meeting in the $5000 Miss Princess. Both races are at 350 yards.

Mrs. Theresa Blazer of city was crowned "Queen Day" on the nationally vised ABC show broadcaster cently when she requested crash helmet, two pair braces and a trip to Nash Tenn." as her wish.
Two of Mrs. Blazer's children have bone deficie which necessitates their wearing braces on their legs. crash helmet is for a third who suffered a skull fracture and concussion and must constant protection for head.
Mrs. Blazer was one of four women chosen from studio audience at the M Rouge, in Hollywood to be interviewed on the show by Bailey, master of ceremonies.

While these two appear to become the brightest stars of the meeting, there are a number of others hovering in the wings, including Rebel Cause, Triple Lady, Rock Bar, Breeze Bar, Table Tennis, First Call and Miss Louton.
This brilliant array of quarter horse runners has been attracted to the magnificent and modern Los Alamitos track by the $375,000 offered in stakes and purses drawn up by Racing Secretary Ed Burke.
Most of them are expected to compete opening day in either the Inaugural Stakes for 3-year-olds or the $5000 Shue Fly.
With the exception of Tonto Bars Hank, the top candidates for the estimated $25,000 PC-HRA Derby will undoubtedly be present in the Inaugural in order to prep for the Derby Trials Saturday, April 15.
The Derby will be held the following Saturday and that winner is virtually assured of an invitation to the $25,000 Los Alamitos Championship May 6.
Racing fans familiar with the modern and roomy grandstand and clubhouse again find daily double wagering at Los Alamitos. There will also be nine races each day, with first post time at 1:15. Daily double wagering windows will close five minutes before first post.
There will be no live television of the Los Alamitos feature races this year.
