B4—Anaheim Gazette Anaheim, Thursday, April 13, 1961 Students Prepare for Western High Graduation Graduation is just ahead—that is, if you are a member of the class of 1961. This marks the second graduating class for Western High School and 835 seniors also give it the distinction of being the largest class. Commencement for the Western Pioneers will be held Thursday, June 15, at La Palma Stadium at 8:15 p.m. Baccalaureate services will be held in the Anaheim auditorium Sunday, June 11. Seniors are currently making final arrangements for their cap and gown rentals. Final announcement orders will be made this week and the last delivery of class rings is also scheduled then. Traditionally, many seniors find the possible expenses at graduation a surprise. Although there are no required expenditures, such items as class rings, announcements, annuals, class pictures, and cap and gown rentals are in popular demand. The official class photographer is the Lynn Hawkins Studio of Anaheim. The Pioneer senior awards assembly is scheduled for Thursday, June 1. Seniors who will not meet graduation requirements are being notified. One school quarter remains and third quarter Oil Fever Creeps Into Anaheim Area Anaheim, sporting everything from amusement parks to some of the finest homes in the nation, today faces the prospect of acquiring "some of that old oil fever." A major oil company has confirmed it is acquiring oil leases in west Anaheim for "wildeat" wells projected to explore an approximate 1,400-acre area. A spokesman for Standard Oil Co., said leasing agents have been contacting property owners for the last three weeks and now are completing sign-ups for the required land. The area intended for drilling was described generally as between Euclid and Gilbert Aves, and Katella and Orange Sts. The spokesman declined to tell the exact area for project operations because of a possibility that other oil firms will attempt to obtain leases. Drilling of an exploratory Teen Dances Slated Upwards of 500 high school and pre-high school youth will enjoy the facilities of the California National Guard Armory in Fullerton for weekly Saturday night dances, it was jointly announced today by the City of Fullerton and Guard officials. Anaheim youths will be attending. Popularity of the Fullerton Teen Center, dubbed the "Keyhole" caused the move from the recreation building in Hillcrest Park to the larger Guard facilities. The move climaxed several months of paper work to secure the building's use, Guard officials noted. Fullerton City Administrator Herman A. Hiltscher commended Capt. Wade G. Richmond, president of the local Armory board, who with 1st Lt. Billy G. Thornton worked out the details. Capt. Richmond, speaking on behalf of both company commanders, welcomed the teen-age parties as an asset to the community and a healthy outlet for the energies of youth. Richmond's civilian occupation is a Fullerton police officer. The armory offers a dancing area equivalent to one and one-half basketball courts or enough space for about 250 couples. Kitchen facilities will be used Students To Meet Former Santa Ana College journalism students under John H. McCoy, who is now director of the School of Journalism at the University of Southern California, will sponsor their annual "John McCoy Reunion" on Saturday, April 22, at the Dal-Rae Restaurant in Pico-Rivera. Publication staff members from 1934 through 1941 are being invited to the reunion. Chairmen include Jack Gardner of Whittier, Vic Rowland of North Hollywood, Richard Mather of Santa Ana and Ed Velarde of Hollywood. The McCoy group joins with other members of the SAC Journalism Alumni Association in financing the annual John McCoy Journalism Scholarship. The winner last June was Carolyn Bridge of Anaheim, who was first editor of The Titan at Orange County State College. Just a few days remain in the search for a suitable motif for next year's procession. All entries postmarked before midnight on April 15 will be accepted for judging. The winning theme will serve as the basis for the design and decoration of the 60 floats to be seen in the annual midwinter event to be held in Pasadena on January 1, 1962. All entries must be addressed to the Tournament of Roses Association, 391 S. Orange Blvd., Pasadena. Post cards—and not letters—are to be used in submitting ideas. Persons taking part in the contest may send in as many entries as they choose, but only one suggestion may be included on each card. Honor Student Richard V.
