'Fight Cancer' Fund Drive Opens Monday; County Goal is $118,535 The Orange County branch of the American Cancer Society, which is asking for $118,535 in the fund raising appeal opening next Monday, urges every adult to do two things to protect himself against cancer. It asked each person to have a medical checkup annually, no matter how well he feels; and to learn cancer's seven danger signals and go to a doctor immediately if one of them lasts longer than two weeks. Research facts released by the society state that cancer often begins as a "localized" disease, when just one tiny cell in the body—or perhaps a few cells—unexplainedly turns malignant. The cancer then grows through a process of cell division observable at first only through a microscope but later with the naked eye. Most cancers originate on the Y Anticipates Campers Will Break Record A record number of Anaheim campers is expected to participate in the Young Men's Christian Association 1961 summer camp program, according to William C. Poiler, general secretary. Surface of some tissue, such as the skin, the inner surface of a body cavity, or the lining of a duct. As long as the cancer remains in its original location it is known as "carcinoma in situ," or cancer in its original site. In theory all cancers can be cured when it is possible to remove or destroy all of the cancer cells in the patient's body. This is easily accomplished by surgery in the earliest "in situ" stage. After a time, however, some of the cancer cells penetrate beyond the surface tissue to invade underlying tissues. Nevertheless, as long as the cancer cells remain more or less together as an intact mass in a localized state, surgery or radiation usually are successful. From then on the risks increase. Some cancer cells eventually become detached from the original mass and float through the lymph channels or blood vessels to other parts of the body. The body's protective mechanism usually goes to work at this point trapping the detached cancer cells and holding them as long as possible in a lymph node in the region of the original organ. At this stage of regional involvement the prospects of successful surgery or radiation therapy are still relatively good. If left untreated the cancer cells eventually break out of News About Our Service Mer Army Pfc. Clyde A. Robertson, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde L. A rifleman in the infantry's Company E, he entered the Army in October 1959, completed basic training at Fort Ord and arrived overseas in March, 1960. Donald E. Mountain camping periods at Y Camp Osceola, in the Barton Flats area of the San Bernardino Mountains, will be July 1-8, July 22-29 and August 12-19 for boys, and June 24-July 1 and July 15-22 for girls. Family camp will be September 2-4. The camp is an accredited member of the American Camping Association and provides swimming, riding, crafts and other popular activities. Adventure day camp periods for boys and girls ages 6 through 11 years are again expected to attract more than 1,000 local youths. The campers are picked up near their homes by busses for each day's activities. Day camp fun will begin June 26 and convene on August 11. Too many drivers traveling at fast speeds leave only one-quarter of a second spacing between their car and the one ahead. A driver needs three seconds to respond to a sudden crisis in daylight more time in darkness. The body's protective mechanism usually goes to work at this point: trapping the detached cancer cells and holding them as long as possible in a lymph node in the region of the original organ. At this stage of regional involvement the prospects of successful surgery or radiation therapy are still relatively good. If left untreated the cancer cells eventually break out of their temporary prison and spread into various and distant parts of the body. In this stage of advanced cancer, death is almost always inevitable. It is the danger of cancer's spread in the body which causes the American Cancer Society to stress the urgency of regular health checkups and ready familiarity with cancer's seven danger signals. During the April Cancer Cruse hundreds of volunteer workers will pass the ACS neighbor-to-neighbor (red, white, and blue) kits along neighborhood blocks throughout Orange County. These kits contain educational literature that each family is asked to read and keep. The kit also contains small envelopes in which donations may be placed. Neighbors are asked to place donations in these envelopes, put them back into the large kit and pass the kits on to their neighbors. In this way the ACS hopes every home in Orange County will receive its message, "Guard Your Family — Fight Cancer With a Checkup and a Check." Army Pvt. Gabriel R. FUCHSIA BLOOMS Fuchsias bloom on new growth only, and the gardener's efforts should all be turned toward promoting as much of it as possible. Feed Fuchsias frequently and give them plenty to drink to keep them growing. Pinching out the terminal shoots will encourage bushiness and fuller bloom when it comes. Don't be afraid to pinch off the first buds that appear. You'll get two or more for every one you remove eventually. Canes of climbing roses should be guided along the fence or trellis that supports them. By arching them slightly, the gardener encourages dormant buds along the cane to break and push up with new growth. And it's on this new growth that the flowers will be borne.
