Course Planned For Dental Aides Responding to a reported demand for well-trained dental assistants, Orange Coast College announced this week the addition of a two-year course for dental assistants, beginning in September. The Orange County Dental Society will support the OCC program through representation on the advisory committee and by providing work experience opportunities for students, it was stated. Industry Club Passes Fund On To Local YMCA Proceeds from the fourth Orange County Management Conference, held at Chapman College, have been presented to the college and to the Anaheim Industrial Management Club, which co-sponsored the event along with the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Orange County. The check for $500 to the college will go into the Student Loan Fund and that to the Anaheim Industrial Management Club into the YMCA campership program. The checks were presented by Donald Calkins, chairman of the conference, which was attended by more than 600 supervisory personnel. Initial plans are now underway for the fifth conference to be held later this year. Calkins, who is project administrator of armament and flight control at the Autonetics Division of North American Aviation in Fullerton, recently received the first National Council of Industrial Management Clubs award presented by the Anaheim club. OCEAN FISHING SEASON TO OPEN Opening of the sportfishing season is scheduled Saturday in San Clemente, with a fishing contest aboard the city's six sportfishing boats. An added event this year will be a pier fishing contest for men, women, boys and girls. Speaking at a meeting held in New York City recently to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the enrichment of bread and flour, Dr. Sebrell pointed out that all vital statistics have been improved in the past 20 years. "Infant death rate is Dr.W.H.Sebrell Jr. lower, average length of life is increasing, children are taller, heavier and stronger than they were in the 1930's," he said. "Athletic records are shattered regularly by high school and college students. While numerous factors have contributed to this improvement, we feel sure that they could not have been attained on an average intake of thiamine, niacin, riboflavin and iron as low as we had in this country prior to enrichment." Dr. Sebrell, former director of the National Institutes of Health, cited records in Newfoundland where also vital statistics showed a vast improvement within four years after an enrichment program was started there. "Wherever nutritional studies have been made, better nutrition has been shown to improve the vital statistics most prominently in the infant death rate, which in Newfoundland decreased by 60% during the first ten years of the enrichment program. "Studies by the United States Department of Agriculture have shown that the added thiamine and niacin provided by enriched bread and flour brought many other deficient U.S. diets up to adequacy and in recent years constituted the most significant improvement in the nutrient intake in the U.S. dietary. "Deficiency diseases such as pellagra and beri-beri, virtually unknown in the United States today, although these were quite prevalent in the 30's. "It may well be said that bread has always been a good food. It has contributed to mankind's well being for more than 8,000 years. When enrichment came along it made a good food better.
