State Senator The State Printing Office may be in for a thorough investigation as a result of recent hearings on the burning of surplus textbooks by the State Department of Education. Testimony indicated that the surplus problem may have been increased by the overprinting of as much as 10 percent of books ordered by the Department of Education. And there was other evidence piling up against certain officials as well as the printing office and Department of Education. The situation caused the Assembly Ways and Means Subcommittee to hold back some of its material for fear the irregularities could not be prosecuted later if certain witnesses testified and gave concrete evidence now. Assemblyman Bruce Sumner of Orange County is right on top of this. After hearing Dr. Roy Simpson's testimony at a hearing last week, Sumner summed up the shocking situation with a curt "incredible." The way it looks now, there's sure to be some heads rolling before long. Of course the elected ones may escape some of the wrath until they come up for re-election or their positions become appointive through legislation this session. There are charges of price gouging too against private members and guests of the Junior Ebell Club were entertained at their recent general meeting by Radburn Robinson, operatic tenor, who presented an aria from "Tosca" and several songs from Broadway shows, including the recent "Green Leaves of Summer" and an original melody, "Timothy." Mrs. Arthur Pressel, president, presented flower corsages and introduced past presidents and past coordinators. Dr. Frank Hoffman, director of the Child Guidance Center of Greater Whittier, outlined the functions of a community Child Guidance Clinic to help disturbed children. Mrs. Carl Last, third vice president, reported that the Fashion Show Benefit netted an estimated $1800. Mrs. Thoren Cook won the grand prize and Mrs. Joseph Bell received a gift for selling the most rattle tickets. In the business meeting members voted to donate $25 to the Bobbi Hutcheson Fund; also, $100 will be given to the American Field Service program in Anaheim. Mrs. Donald Smith, gerontology chairman, asked for volunteers to help make favors for an Easter party for Ward 51, Orange County Hospital, to be held March 23. Mrs. Smith's The way it looks now, there's sure to be some heads rolling before long. Of course the elected ones may escape some of the wrath until they come up for re-election or their positions become appointive through legislation this session. There are charges of price gouging, too, against private textbook publishers who also supply the state's schools with certain books, particularly the high schools. This is adding more fuel to the already hot fire over our current educational program in California. On this subject, one legislator disclosed that eastern publishers grossed an extra $350,000 a year from California because the State Department of Education allowed a 5 percent transportation and marketing allowance. This meant a school district in California paid $1.35 more per book than a Texas school district paid for the same book. There are many more things popping on the education front and before the smoke has cleared there are going to be some changes made. U.S. Senator Thomas H. Kuchel was in Sacramento last week as a guest of the local Rotary Club. He also spoke to both houses of the Legislature. Former Vice President Richard Nixon also came to town over the past weekend to speak before a gathering of the State Republican Central Committee. There hasn't been this much activity in the Republican Camp at the State Capitol since the Democrats took over with a majority. State Controller Cranston said the highway users tax receipts totaled $29,104,458 in February. The State got $19.4 million, counties $7 million and cities $2.7 million. Orange County received $257,409.64. PTA Unit Meets Next Wednesday What special services are available for your exceptional child in Anaheim city schools? Parents of children attending Theodore Roosevelt School will be given answers to this question at he next P-TA meeting next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Room 19. A panel discussing the problem of special services will include Dr. May Rich, school psychologist; Mrs. Nesta Pisakov, speech therapist; Mrs. Elizabeth Howe, school nurse, and Mrs. Evelyn Sonnie, principal. Election of officers for 1961-62 will also take place. Parents are urged to particularly note the change of day and date, occasioned by the Easter holidays. State Controller Cranston said the highway users tax receipts totaled $29,104,458 in February. The State got $19.4 million, counties $7 million and cities $2.7 million. Orange County received $257,409.64. More political scuttlebutt... Democrats grooming Assemblyman Dick Hanna for Congress, or will it be a judgeship, Dick? Door hasn't been closed yet by the reapportionment committee for four assembly districts in Orange County instead of the previously announced three. Democrats also rumored to be grooming Robert McCarthy of motor vehicles for U.S. Senator and Los Angeles Councilwoman Rosalind Wyman for Secretary of State. Still no young men have applied for nomination to the California Maritime Academy. This month is your last chance. I'm still looking for my one qualified appointee. Year Shows Jump In Nursery Stock Gross value of nursery stock in Orange County last year rose 33 percent, with major increases in ornamentals, citrus trees, flat stock and potted plants.
