The average American baby born in 1959 had a life expectancy at that time of 69.7 years—the highest ever recorded for the total population of infants, Health Information Foundation reports.
By contrast, as the chart illustrates, a baby born in 1900 could expect to live only 47.3 years.
Although both males and females have benefited from increasing life expectancy in this century, the Foundation adds, greater gains have been made by females. Thus, while life expectancy for males rose from 46.3 years in 1900 to 66.4 in 1958 (a gain of 20.1 years), the comparable rise for females was from 48.3 to 72.7 (a gain of 24.4 years).
The Foundation singles out a number of social consequences arising from the trend toward longer life, notably a record growth in the number of aged persons in this country, an increase in the working lifetime of the average person, a decline in the number of orphans, and a general postponing of widowhood to the later years.
According to George Bugbee, Foundation President, the increase in life expectancy is "one of the most fundamental changes to affect our country in this century." The improvement has been largely due to a "dynamic growth" in medical knowledge, particularly in the last two decades. To illustrate the effect of medical progress on improved life expectancy, Mr. Bugbee refers to "the infective and parasitic diseases, which once decimated those at the younger ages, but which have now been largely controlled."
This class of diseases, which caused about 18 per cent of the deaths in 1900, today causes just over 1 per cent."

Ham, Yams Menu Saves Work Time
To save you unnecessary kitchen hours, ham, candied yams and grapefruit is a colorful party entree or can make a Sunday dinner look its prettiest.
Stud one pre-cooked half ham (weighing 6 pounds) with 1 tablespoon of whole cloves. Place on rack in shallow roasting pan, bake 45 minutes at 325°.
Drain. Combine syrup from 2 cans (1-pound each) of grapefruit sections with ½ cup of French dressing, ¼ cup of molasses and 2 teaspoons of salt.
Guild to Present 'Abie's Irish Rose'
"Abie's Irish Rose," the immortal comedy stage hit of years ago, will be presented by the Orange Theatre Guild in the Orange Theater next Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Several Anaheim residents are in the all-county cast.
Arrange 8 medium yams, pared and sliced ½-inch tick, around ham, pour syrup over ham and yams and bake on hour. Baste frequently.
Add reserved grapefruit sections before serving.

In compiling their six rules for better living, health experts at the YMCA found resistance to exercise among some people because of "athlete's heart." Ever hear of it? If you have, forget it. It's an old-wives tale with no basis in fact. Modern research has proven it doesn't exist.
Experts agree that the best way to keep healthy is to exercise EVERY DAY. This activity—graded to your needs by

Now that you've had your checkup and have set up your exercise schedule, step on the scales. How much do you weigh? Too much? Forget about trick diets or starvation regimens.
Health guide number three covers this situation. The easiest way to reduce is to EAT LESS and be physically active. If you have a real weight problem, see your doctor. Remember that extra weight is an invitation to trouble. It adds to the work load of your heart and other vital organs.
Your fourth guide advises against an enemy of health that's harder to diagnose than any bacteria or virus. We're talking about boredom!
To Be Staged By Students
"Whisper in the Heart," a Lincoln play, will be presented by the Chapman College Drama Department at 8:30 p.m. on March 1, 2, 4 and 5 in the college auditorium. Tickets will be available at the door.
The play was written by Henry J. Kemp-Blair, Chapman instructor in speech and drama, especially for the college's Centennial Year observance since it was on March 4, 1861, the day of Lincoln's inauguration, that Chapman was founded.
The play deals with the great struggles within Lincoln's soul, with life and death decisions and the search for a peace free from malice.
Kemp-Blair directs a cast of 15 in the production.

Necessity is still The Mother of Invention
When engineers repositioned the fuel tank in the 1961 Chevrolet they also developed a deep-well cargo space in the trunk.
Necessity being the mother of invention prompted perky Judy Cooper, Mountain View, Cal., to tie a clothesline onto the raised trunk lid and fill the new well with water. A washboard and detergent completed the "laundry room" for washing out those things which needed washing during a motor trip. "It worked quite well," said Judy, "we didn't have to carry an extra washtub."
