Ten Groups Invite In SAC April Foot
Drama Instructor Robert Blaustone of Santa Ana College, chairman of the Footlight Festival Committee, reported this week that 10 community theater groups have been invited to take part in this year's competition.
The festival is scheduled for April 5, 6 and 7. Starting time for each night is 8 o'clock in Phillips Hall on the college campus.
Lee Ford, director of drama activities, will supervise stage facilities for the festival.
Santa Ana College and the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Santa Ana are co-sponsoring the festival for the third year. The soft drink firm, represented by James Blackburn, community services director, will provide the award trophies participating plaques and printed media.

CACTUS JACK (Gene Nelson) basks in the admiration of Bessie and Tessie (The Earl Twins—Jane and Ruth) in a western music hall segment of “The Sounds of America,” Bell Telephone Hour’s show produced with Disneyland settings.
When you twist the dial to the Bell Telephone Hour’s NBC program tomorrow evening don’t be surprised if some familiar scenes go flashing by on the screen.
The entire show was filmed right here in your home town—at Disneyland.
Titled “The Sounds of America,” the Bell production is its first original musical in the long-time series. It is full of filmed photo essays, special sound effects, original music by Gordon Jenkins, and familiar music with new lyrics.
Scenes of the “Magic Kingdom,” of course, are replete throughout the show.
Jenkins, given a free hand by the Bell Telephone Hour’s executive producer, Barry Wood, to develop the Disneyland idea, grouped his “sounds of America” in four parts.
The first is the “Train to Yesterday,” which uses Disneyland’s old iron horse for a trip through the past, winding up in a storybook castle in the “Land of Let’s Pretend.”
The second section presents the sounds of the Old West, centered around the Golden Horseshoe Saloon.
Third is the sounds of the big river—a nostalgic visit with Mark Twain and the fun a small boy of Huck Finn’s day can have on an island, in a tree house or in a cave.
Finally, there is the celebrations for the festival.
Improper Use Of Car Lights Danger Told
“Many motorists apparently are still unaware that parking lamps are not a substitute for headlights,” California Highway Patrol Commissioner Bradford M. Crittenden pointed out this week.
“The law which prohibits use of parking lamps while driving—except as a turning signal or when the headlights also are on—has been in the vehicle code for five years,” he said, “but the incident is incorrect usage is still high.
“Passage of the law was designed to halt a dangerous practice. It was patrol experience that parking lights used as driving lights tended to confuse incoming drivers. The pinpoints of lights were misconstrued as regular headlamps viewed at some distance.
“Whenever it is necessary to turn on your lights while driving, be sure it is the headlamps, not the parking lights.”

The second section presents the rounds of the Old West, centered around the Golden Horseshoe Saloon.
Third is the sounds of the big river—a nostalgic visit with Mark Twain and the fun a small boy of Huck Finn's day can have on an island, in a tree house or in a cave.
Finally, there is the celebration several decades ago of the Volunteer Fire Department.
During his 10 weeks' stay here Jenkins lived in a motel across the street from Disneyland where, on an old plano, he wrote the show's musical scort.
Anaheim Women Participate in Consumer Panel
Mrs. David Pagano of 539 Ana Dr. and Miss Sally Davis of 420 W. Wilhelmina St, were among more than 750 Southland homemakers attending the first annual Congress of the Continuing Consumer Panel of Research recently at the Cocanut Grove, Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles.
The program featured special guests Robert Sample, manager of the Los Angeles office of the Better Business Bureau; Art Baker, TV and radio star; Merle McGinnis, executive secretary, Western Association of Food Chains, and J. Murray Yunker, executive vice president of Certified Grocers.
LuWanna Cormier, director, announced the establishment of annual Connie Consumer awards, which includes the excellence of home economics departments of various size publications.
"Whenever it is necessary to turn on your lights while driving, be sure it is the headlamps, not the parking lights."
Part-time employment is enabling many students to stay enrolled at Orange Coast College and continue their education, college officials reported this week. For many of them it is the first step toward gaining their bachelor's degree, it was pointed out.
In the six-week period prior to Christmas vacation the college's employment bureau placed 92 students in part-time jobs, Richard P. Welsh, OCC employment counselor, reported.
During this time there were 165 job opportunities offered through the bureau. Some students sent out as job applicants, however, were not employed because their free hours were not satisfactory to the employer.
Employers looking for full- or part-time employees in any field are urged to call the college employment office.
Ross Harrison of Tustin has been cast as the belligerent, warm-hearted Scotsman, Lachie, principal character in the third Santa Ana College drama production. "The Hasty Heart," to be presented in Philips Hall March 9, 10 and 11.

THAT CLOWN OF LAFFS, DON LUCAS, appears nitely with his trio and Bob NELSON and Artie PA-MER at the MARDI GRAS in Orange.
Stopped at the TWIN FLAME on E. 4th in Long Beach the other eve. This is the spot famous for steak dinners at 80¢ (you broil it yourself, over a cute center fireplace) with all the salad and garbanza beans you wish. Lots of fun. You will be pleasingly entertained by Pattie French with song and keyboard. Fellows, check the nude artistry behind Pattie (lifesize, in color). It's great at the TWIN FLAME. Try it.
Don't forget Buddy Reed at the famous VICTOR HUGO Restaurant of Long Beach. On Broadway. Buddy is the fellow featured for 6 months at the RIVERSIDE in Reno. He is tremendous. He hails from Hoboken, Sinatra's home town (in fact, they went to school together and are friends). Buddy is known as an entertainer's entertainer and many timts you will catch celebrities at VICTOR HUGO in Long Beach. It's an excellent dining-out spot too, with great cuisine, at reasonable prices and luxurious atmosphere.
Last week we established a wall done by talented a Don Mitchell.
APPLE VALLEY STEAK HOUSE in Long Beach is known for their outstanding food, service and western tiff. It's easy to park too, as they have their own with the friendliest attendin in town. The prime rite out of this world, as is the onion soup, and I love roquefort. You will served huge trays of brunch (many varieties), also delicate home-made melba toast. Don Mason is at the piano now. Also this is the place (APPLE VALLEY STEAK HOUSE) where they hire couple of bartenders as am and they are still there. Your hosts, of course, are O'Contratta and Charlie Dodds.

Last week we established a record. Five mistakes in one paragraph. Remember the picture of Don May blowing balloons? Well, this is what it should have said but didn't: (quote) Don May (he is the gentleman with the derby) of the GAY 90s and LEILANI HUT restaurants wants you kids to know, if you eat all your dinner he will make you a balloon animal. Pictured with Don is Carie and Brad, with mama Lois Smith. (unquote)
There is a little cafe located in Bellflower, on Belmont to be exact, a block off Bellflower Blvd., called THE CHEROKEE (commonly referred to as ELI'S). I had lunch there the other noon with another news man by the name of Coke (of the Globe-Herald). We tried one of Eli's delicious Denver sandwiches (not only good but a meal in itself). This restaurant has built a tremendous following, because of the great food and the personality of the owner. In fact, by the size of the crowd daily one would be led to believe that this was the only place to eat in Bellflower. Even if there is a waiting line, you won't wait long, as the service is fast and good, and it's worth the short wait. While there, check the drawings on the back school together and are friends.
Other places to go for this week:
HAL GREGG'S ... AND HEIM. Now features MARY THOMAS TRIO. Real fine... HAL GREGG is a lovely restaurant, fine dancing and great entertainment.
STAN ROSSI'S ANSTAY STEAK HOUSE. Last week for the sensational NORMAN BROWN show. Dance the works here.
LEILANI HUT in Belmont Shore. With tropical atmosphere. Catch the eye of LITTLE JOE of the KK Koasters doing his PRINCE PUPOOLI in the HILO HATIE version (all 4 feet of him).
MARDI GRAS in ORANGE with the fabulous continue show. Starring BOB NEWSON and ARTIE PALMER plus THE LAFF KING, DO LUCAS, and his boys.
Have you tried that scrummish smorgasbord served by LITTLE SWEDEN? The food is terrific and with many dishes (over 25) choose from. This attractive little family restaurant, colorful Swedish decor, course, is owned by four chairing Swedes. And they know how to prepare tantalizing fries. LITTLE SWEDEN has convenient locations, one East Long Beach, the other Seal Beach. They even make their own bread and pie. You can buy some at take with you if you desire. Have you ever tried Swedish bread? It's so different, the sweet side wonderful for toast too. You will enjoy dining at LITTLE SWEDEN. So reasonable, too..
