A6—Anaheim Gazette Anaheim, Thursday, Jan. 19, 1961 Costlier Natural Gas In Force Rate Boosts, Say Eighty-one percent of all increases in rates of California utilities authorized by the State Public Utilities Commission during the last fiscal year were to offset higher charges for out-of-state natural gas, over which the state regulatory body has no control. This was revealed in the commission's annual report to the governor, submitted by its members, Everett C. McKeage (president), Peter E. Mitchell, Matthew J. Dooley, C. Lyn Fox and Theodore H. Jenner. The report states that: 1. Wages and other operational costs continued to rise, forcing utility and transportation charges upward. The commission authorized increases in rates which would raise nuces of regulated gas, phone and water utilities $850,583 per year. Out of total, $29,000,000, or $1.47 cent, was due to higher charges for out-of-state natural gas. 2. Surveys were responded for reductions of utility already in effect, resulting savings of $1,415,924 per customer in areas in population density had decreased and thus reduced cost of providing service. 3. No general increase rates of any electric utility authorized and charges to tric customers were recd $849,448 per year. 4. Value of safety was slid by the substantial reduction the number and severity of incidents reported. 5. The commission ruled er lengthy public hearings, utilities which avail thems of the opportunity undereral law to take liberalized preciation for income tax poses, can charge as an pense in determining rates the amount of taxes act paid.
