"OLDEST LOCALLY OWNED SAVINGS ASSOCIATION IN ANAHEIM" ANAHEIM SAVINGS 187 WEST CENTER STREET • ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA • KE 5-7158 State Health Chief Tells Of Gains During Year A health services program for seasonal agriculture workers and their families, the registering of ionizing radiation sources, and a greater percentage of improvement among alcoholics under treatment were among advances made this last year by the State Department of Public Health. Recapitulating the department's activities during 1960, Dr. Malcolm H. Merlall, veteran State Health Director, said in his annual report this week that several new programs will be initiated this year, based on programming and the results of research conducted in the year just ended. Among the most important activities listed were: 1. The drafting of a health services program for domestic seasonal agricultural workers and their families. 2. The program, prepared at the request of the governor, proposes field clinics, prenatal care for mothers, home nursing, transportation to clinic centers or the needy sick, improved sanitation, and making hospitalization available. Funds will be sought in the current legislative session for the establishment of a full-time migratory health unit in the department, plus some financial assistance to help county health departments and local agencies to extend preventive and medical care services to the migrant farm labor families. More than 12,750 radion installations have been completed at the University of California at Los Angeles, and pays half the costs of the clinic at San Francisco County Jail No. 2 in San Bruno. Air Pollution Study Dr. Merrill said the results of several studies give strong emphasis to program direction in 1961. In particular they stress the need for public health focus on air pollution, traffic accidents, occupational illnesses and maternity care. Results of a sample health survey on the state's residents showed that 45 percent of California's adult population has been bothered by air pollution either at home, at work, or both, he reported. The survey disclosed that eye and nasal irritation were the most frequently smog effects; that some Californians had moved one or more times because of air pollution, and that smog keeps many indoors, causes a change in plans or living routines, affects other family members, and affects property. The result from another oral polio vaccine will be available before the end of 1961 in any appreciable quantity," Dr. Merrill said. "so it should be emphasized that vaccination with Salk polio vaccine should be continued." Notifiable infectious diseases took a considerable upswing in 1960, with 121,523 cases reported through November as compared to 116,401 in 1959. Among the most frequently occurring infectious diseases, there was a significant increase in streptococcal infections, which topped the 1960 list with 28,800 reported cases, compared to 22,361 for all of 1959. Venereal diseases, mumps, and viral hepatitis also increased in number. The current trend as regards venereal disease is unfavorable, according to the director. There have been substantial increases in reported cases of both infectious syphilis and gonorrhea. There were 1442 cases of primary and secondary syphilis reported through November, as compared to 952 in 1959, as compared to 51 percent. The result from another study, reported the director, show that California's six million workers lose an estimated 36 million days from work each year because of sickness or injury. Slek Leave Factor Dr. Merrill termed as "striking" the survey finding that lack of sick leave coverage is associated with higher sickness absence rates. Men without sick leave coverage show a rate of time lost from work that is one-third higher than the rate for those covered. This holds true, also, for women workers. Among men the conditions that are particularly important include accidents, heart diseases, ulcers, hernias, and conditions of the muscle, bone and joint. Among women the conditions include genito-urinary conditions, migrain and headache, and anemia of unspecified type. Because workers are the productive segment of the population, their health needs should receive special attention, yet until very recently this special attention has been limited to work-connected conditions and in many instances limited to safety programs," declared Dr. Merrill. Death Causes Listed The preliminary results of still another study, said the director, show that about three-fourth of maternal deaths are avoidable. Non-obstetric conditions, such as heart disease and pneumonia, accounted for the greatest number of deaths, followed by abortion, hemorrhage, toxemia of pregnancy, and other obstetrical conditions. The department is developviral hepatitis also increased in number. The current trend as regards venereal disease is unfavorable, according to the director. There have been substantial increases in reported cases of both infectious syphilis and gonorrhea. There were 1442 cases of primary and secondary syphilis reported through November, as compared to 952 in 1959, an increase of 51 percent. To meet this upward surge the department, in cooperation with the U.S. Health Service and local health jurisdictions, this year will launch an intensified casefinding program in several local health departments, including San Francisco, and Los Angeles City and County. State Funds Aid Officer Training Under an agreement approved by the Board of Supervisors rookie Orange County sheriff's deputies henceforth will receive half of their pay from the state while in training. To be eligible for this allocation, however, the county must continue to provide 160 hours of training for each new officer, in compliance with requirement of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. The Division of Alcoholic Rehabilitation administers state funds which support alcohol clinics in Oakland, Sacramento, San Jose, Stockton, Los Angeles and San Diego. Clinics last year admitted about 1600 problem drinkers and had an average monthly load of 1000 patients. The department also supports an alcoholism research CONE-O’CONNOR MORTUARY FRANK CONE, PRES. The department is developing plans for a traffic accident prevention program, according to Dr. Merrill, who pointed out that traffic accidents represent one of the major health problems, and are the leading cause of death among Californians age 15 to 34 years. He reported that paralytic polio took tragic and unnecessary toll again in 1960, with 367 cases reported, compared with 418 for the previous year. Deaths numbered 23, four more than recorded in 1959. The pattern of the disease has remained unchanged during recent years, he said. About 80 percent of the year's cases occurred in non-vaccinated or poorly vaccinated individuals, and with some 40 percent occurring in children below the age of five. LOS ANGELES STREET, ANAHEIM Home Savings Marks Record Growth in 1960 Record-smashing performances by its Anaheim office and 23 other Southern California branches gave Home Savings and Loan Association five world records for its industry during 1960. Howard Ahmanson, chairman of the board, announced this week. Total assets, savings, real estate loans, reserves, and earnings paid to savers were the highest in the 71-year-old history of the association. It was also the highest ever recorded anywhere in the world by a financial institution of this kind. With more branch offices than any other savings and loan association in the nation, the company has grown with the communities in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino Counties it serves. Anaheim residents joined with nearly one-third million other Southern Californians during 1960 in boosting Home's savings accounts to an all-time high of $765,529,777, said Ahmanson's report. The 12-month increase of $154 million is more than double the growth of savings accounts ever recorded, without merger, in any 12-month period by a savings and loan associate. The 12-month increase of $154 million is more than double the growth of savings accounts ever recorded, without merger, in any 12-month period by a savings and loan association. Savings accounts placed with the firm boomed upwards by almost 47,000 in 1960, reaching a total of 225,100 at year's end. A record total of $30,894,205 was poured back to its savers in earning payments in 1960, providing a tremendous reservoir of purchasing power and increased family security, the report said. During 1960 earnings were paid at the annual rate of 4½ percent, compounded every three months. This rate will continue for the first quarter of 1961. Ahmanson said.
