Open House Events Are Staged By Savings and Loan Firm Today If you're five feet tall you can win up to $1,404 and if you're six feet tall you can win up to $1,620 during the open house festivities now being celebrated at the Fullerton office of Glendale Federal Savings and Loan Association, 320 N. Harbor Blvd. The money will be awarded as part of the Fullerton office's "Win Double Your Height in Money" contest, which is open to the public and costs nothing to enter. "We probably have the simplest method ever invented for entering a contest," said Gordon A. Klett, manager of the office. "All a person has to do is come into our office, write his or her name and address on the entry blank form available here, and place it with the other entries. You don't even have to be present to win." Klett said the first prize winner will double his or her height in silver dollars, the second prize winner will win double his height in half dollars and the third prize winner will win double his height in quarters. The fourth through tenth prize winners will win a beautiful custom flower arrangement from among those on display in Glendale Federal's current Festival of Flowers program. There is a special prize bonus for Glendale Federal savings account customers, he said. They will be allowed to stand on an 18-inch stepladder to be 1961 Benefit Changes Told You do not have to completely retire to draw social security benefits, Ralph A. Dillman, manager of the Social Security Administration district office, Santa Ana, stated this week in outlining 1961 changes in the regulations. Said he: Under recent changes in the social security law many social security beneficiaries who work in 1961 and later years will have less of their benefits withheld than they do now. As before, however, a person is considered retired if he or she is not earning more than $1200 per year. A beneficiary who earns more than $1200 loses only $1 of benefits for every $2 that he earns between $1200 and $1500. For every $1 of earnings above $1500, he loses $1 of his benefits. Under the rules in effect before 1961, a beneficiary who earned over $1200 in a year would lose a whole month's benefit check for every $80, or fraction of $80 by which his earnings exceeded $1200. So, if his earnings were over $2080 he would lose all benefit checks for the year. However, under both the old and the new rules, a beneficiary can be paid his full benefit check for any month in which he neither works for wages on more than $100 nor renders At year's end, about 5,000,000 California wage and salary workers were employed in non-agricultural activities. This was a new record and above the comparable period of 1959 by about 130,000. The December 1959-December 1960 gain, however, compares with a year-over-year increase of 285,-000 at the beginning of 1960. Employment during the last few months of this year has topped the same months of 1959 by only 3 percent compared with a 12-month increase of 6 percent between January 1959 and January 1960. But even the shrunken 12-month increases in the final months of this year are partly illusory because employment at this time last year was reduced by the steel strike itself and also by steel shortages which curtailed construction work, auto manufacturing, etc. Manufacturing was reported as the softest spot in 1960 in the State's economy. When factory employment figures have been adjusted for seasonal variation, 1960 emerges as a year of a sharp downslide from January through August, followed by a slight pickup in September and a leveling off the remainder of 1960. The year-end total was under that of December 1959 by more than 10,000. Aircraft continued to make the poorest showing of any industry. Even though the long-term decline moderated in the last few months, the aircraft workforce by December was down by about 36,000 from the same time last year. Other durable goods industries have also fared badly during the year. Employment in primary metals—chiefly steel—declined sharply in California as it has in the nation. Activity has also been sluggish in fabricated metals, non-electrical quarters. The fourth through tenth prize winners will win a beautiful custom flower arrangement from among those on display in Glendale Federal's current Festival of Flowers program. There is a special prize bonus for Glendale Federal savings account customers, he said. They will be allowed to stand on an 18-inch stepladder to be measured. "We would like everyone to come in and join us during our open house ceremonies. All of our guests will be given free refreshments and party favors, and will have the chance to measure themselves to see how much money they will receive if they are lucky enough to be one of our winners," Klett said. The open house celebration is being held in connection with the Fullerton office's move to permanent quarters at the newly-constructed $250,000 building, which has 12,000 square feet of office space and will be headquarters for the Glendale Federal's savings and loan activities in Orange County. Open house celebrations are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 9 and 10. Glendale Federal will occupy the entire ground floor area of 5,500 square feet. The remaining 6,500 square feet on the second floor will be available for office suite rentals. The entire building is completely air-conditioned and fireproof. Building highlights include a glass encased stairway at the entrance to the structure, located at the southeast corner of Harbor Blvd. and Whiting Ave., landscaping, and two drive-in teller windows. Parking for Glendale Federtl customers is provided at the rear of the building. However, under both the old and the new rules, a beneficiary can be paid his full benefit check for any month in which he neither works for wages or more than $100 nor renders substantial services in self-employment. It does not matter how high his total earnings for the year may go, he will still be paid his checks for those months. If you are a man age 65 or older, or a woman, age 62 or over, and are still working part-time, you may be entitled to social security benefits for some of the months in the calendar year. If you are past retirement age, but have not yet applied for your social security benefits because your earnings are too high, get in touch with your social security office now. The new 1961 rules may make it possible for you to collect some benefits even though you are working. Mrs. Hitt Gets High GOP Post Mrs. Robert J. (Patricia) Hitt of Orange has been named to the 26-member Executive Committee of the Republican National Committee, GOP National Chairman Thurston Monroe has announced. A Republican national committeewoman for California Mrs. Hitt thus becomes a member of the GOP's top strategy and policy body. First meeting of the group is scheduled this week. She is women's vice chairmaid of the Orange County Republican Central Committee and member of the California State Central Committee. last few months, the aircraft workforce by December was down by about 36,000 from the same time last year. Other durable goods industries have also fared badly during the year. Employment in primary metals—chiefly steel—declined sharply in California as it has in the nation. Activity has also been sluggish in fabricated metals, non-electrical machinery, and some other hard goods industries. "On the other hand," Henning said, "employment continues to move upward in the missiles and electronic industries—although at a less spectacular rate than in 1959. "At year's end, these defense-related industries chalked up a 12-month gain of about 20,000 workers, thus partially offsetting the year-to-year loss in aircraft." Compared with hard goods industries, the less volatile soft goods manufacturing industries maintained their usual moderate growth pattern. A leader in this group is printing and publishing, which reached record employment levels in 1960. The overall weakness in manufacturing in 1960 was more than counteracted by continued strength in non-manufacturing industries. Largest percentage gains were recorded by the services and finance groups, each up by 6 percent in December 1960 from a year ago; and by trade and government, each up by 4 percent.
