This ratio places California third among the states in physician availability (behind New York and Massachusetts) but ahead of the national ratio of 1 to 745. During the year CMA membership reached an all-time high of 17,826, an increase of more than 500 over 1959. The association represents approximately eight out of 10 physicians in private practice. While 23,615 physicians are licensed in California, approximately 2,500 of them are engaged in teaching, government commissions served by 586 doctors conducted the business of the association during 1960. There work reached into every aspect of health and ranged from maternal and child care to problems of the aging, and from traffic safety to ballo inoculations. Medical education accounted for more than $350,000 from dues during 1960. Of this, $162,000 went to the nation's medical schools, the remainder to postgraduate courses, scientific meetings and applications. Last February the association's house of delegates went on record urging establishment of a sixth medical school in California. Public interest services by CMA committees also dealt with these specific health problems of rural areas, school children, industry and many other population segments; nurse recruitment, medical careers enlistment, adoptions, hospital-physician relationships, mental health, rehabilitation, veterans' care and others. The "grey market" in babies drew special attention, resulting in publication of a manual on adoptions for guidance of its members. The association also instituted guiding principles for physician-hospital relationships to strengthen voluntary controls over the quality of care.
