SEEKS MEXICAN NATURAL GAS IMPORT O.K. An application to import natural gas from Mexico into California and to export gas from Texas into Mexico has been filed with the Federal Power Commission by the Southern California Edison Company, it was announced this week. The application was made in connection with a proposed pipeline project approximately 1600 miles long that will transport gas fuel from Texas Gulf Coast and Mexico, through Northern Mexico into Southern California. The FPC filing was Edison's second step in seeking regulatory approval of the $225 million project. On December 5, the power company applied to the California Public Utilities Commission for approval of agreements with Tennessee Gas Transmission Company, Humble Oil & Refining Company, Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and California Gas Transmission Company. These provide for construction by Tennessee-California Gas Transmission Company, Pemex and California Gas Transmission Company of the line which will carry up to 455 million cubic feet per day of gas to Edison's steam-electric generating stations. The Mexican portion of the pipeline, to cost approximately $165 million of the $225 million total, will be financed by the sale of Pemex bonds. Edison President J. K. Horton said the new project would provide the California electric utility with a future gas supply at a price more stable than that for present sources and will give the Southern California market area direct after July 1, 1962," he said. The proposed pipeline will tie to fields operated by Humble Oil & Refining in Texas and to Mexican fields operated by Pemex. The majority of the gas will come from Texas, Horton pointed out, while approximately 75 million cubic feet a day will be picked up in Mexico. A line about 100 miles long will be constructed in Texas. It will connect at Reynosa, Mexico, with a 1200-mile-long pipeline which will reach from Reynosa to a point near Mexicali on the Mexico-California boundary. A third portion of the line, approximately 280 miles in length, will be the final link to Edison's steam-electric stations in Southern California. Teachers Use Vacation Time For Sessions Nine teachers from the Fullerton Union High School and Junior College Districts are using their Christmas vacation time to attend professional conferences. Members of the board of trustees authorized Lawrence A. Myers, language department head at FUHS, to attend a conference of the American Association of Spanish Teachers in San Diego Dec. 28 to 30. The board also approved attendance of Spanish instructors Robert H. Alter and Dorcas Turner from the Junior Col- Edison President J. K. Horton said the new project would provide the California electric utility with a future gas supply at a price more stable than that for present sources and will give the Southern California market area direct access to two new, important gas producing areas. He pointed out that neither of these is now a source of supply for Southern California. "These arrangements also provide a substantial long-term gas supply for Edison's use and will constitute a significant contribution to its air pollution control efforts," Horton said. Horton also pointed out that the company's present commitments for service from the local gas companies which expire on July 1, 1962, involve service which can be interrupted at any time while the new Texas and Mexican source will provide the fuel on an assured annual basis. "We are looking to this project as the principal source of gas for our existing plants. Members of the board of trustees authorized Lawrence A. Myers, language department head at FUHS, to attend a conference of the American Association of Spanish Teachers in San Diego Dec. 28 to 30. The board also approved attendance of Spanish instructors Robert H. Alter and Dorcas Turner from the Junior College, as well as Charles Pierce, German instructor, at the same conference. The district is being represented by five other teachers at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics at Tempe, Arizona, Dec. 27 to 30. Approval was given Henry Mansfield Jr., Fullerton JC; James W. Ivens, La Habra High School; Albert D. Hammel, Buena Park High School; David E. Bell, FUHS; and Paul M. Snyder, Sunny Hills High School, to attend. Beckman Instruments, Inc., has announced the appointment of Walter Adams, of Orange, as administration supervisor of the company's research and development department, Systems Division, Anaheim. Heart Afflictions Now Respond Well to Treatment, Says Report In an effort to clarify a popular misconception about "heart failure," the American Heart Association this week released a hopeful message stating that most patients with this condition respond well to proper medical care and can lead active lives. A new leaflet by the association points out that contrary to wide misunderstanding, congestive heart failure or cardiac insufficiency (the terms used by doctors) do not mean that the heart stops beating. A "falling" heart continues to work, but with less strength than is needed for good health. Medical science has found ways to strengthen the heart and to help patients control their heart failure," the leaflet, "Facts About Congestive Heart Failure," states. Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart's ability to circulate blood normally throughout the body has been weakened by some form of heart or blood vessel disease. Among these are narrowing of the arteries that nourish the heart (atherosclerosis), a severe heart attack, severe high blood pressure, rheumatic fever or heart defects present at birth. The leaflet offers this reassuring information: "Most mild or moderate cases and many severe ones respond well to treatment." Treating the underlying cause is important. For example, if high blood pressure is placing a strain on the heart, it can often be lowered or controlled by medication or diet. When defective heart valves are the cause of heart failure, surgery may be able to correct them. When there is edema (swelling), a salt-restricted diet may be recommended or medicines prescribed to help the kidneys eliminate excess salt and water. Rest, medication, diet and modified daily activities all may be helpful. In general, congestive heart failure requires more than one kind of treatment. Some patients have to adjust to a slower of living, to avoid straining heart. With proper medical vision, heart failure does make an invalid of the patient. The new Heart Association leaflet emphasizes that no physician can recognize treat heart failure. "The sooner he is constricted the sooner the condition can relieved or controlled," it says. Difficulty in breathing swelling of the ankles are most common symptom of heart failure. However, indications do not always show that the heart is failing, which is advisable to see a physician if any of the following occur: 1. Labored breathing during ordinary activity. 2. Frequent waking at night.
