IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO OWN YOUR OWN HOME—AND YOUR AMERICAN RIGHT! VISIT THESE FIRMS THIS WEEK Planters and Plants for Them There are two kinds of containers for plants: those that add to the appearance of whatever they hold, and those that detract from it. If you don't use the first kind, best put your plants in the ground. Old barrel halves with rusted hoops and rotting wood or orange crates knocked together and stained to resemble redwood are no substitutes for the real things. And nursery cans, however practical they are in the nursery, are not the preferred embellishment for a deck or entrance way. If you are going to make your own, at least paint those hoops with a non-corrosive paint and use redwood to start with. If you want something special, a member of the California Association of Nurserymen can show it to you. C.A.N. members have planters in every size, shape and material. When it comes to filling them, there are few restrictions. You could, if you liked, grow a giant Sequoia in a container. And the use of Citrus in tubs has become commonplace. You don't have to be a Bonsal expert to do it. For deck and terrace, the lacy textures of Golden Bamboo are well fitted to planters (you don't need a big one). This is especially attractive in the bamboo-trimmed soy tubs or in redwood. We've always been partial to Chrysanthemums in containers, but the long growing season before bloom arrives makes them less adapted to a permanent place in the patio. The answer is to buy blooming plants and sink them in the container. When the bloom is gone, replace them with other blooming plants. Bird of Paradise is a lovely subject for containers. They will also receive signals reporting the spaceman's physical condition and provide direct communication between him and his earthbound colleagues. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration sponsors the project. Meeting emergencies is a familiar story to telephone people. Reserve power supplies are one of the ways we keep ready for emergencies. These generators run by gasoline or diesel engines are on stand-by in telephone central offices. If they are needed, they can be started up to feed electricity into the batteries that furnish power for your phone calls. So, good weather or bad your telephone is a service you can count on. On behalf of all of us here at the telephone company, I want to wish you the happiest of Holiday Seasons. We hope the New Year holds many good things for you.
