Warning Cautioned on Hazards Of Decorating Aluminum Trees
With Christmas only a few weeks away, a warning on the hazards of decorating aluminum Christmas trees with electric lights was issued today by John F. Henning, director of the State Department of Industrial Relations.
Henning stated that aluminum is almost as good a conductor of electricity as copper, and that if there is any defective or faulty wiring the entire tree could become an exposed "hot wire."
"The insulation on most Christmas tree light cords is not designed to be attached to metal of any kind," said Henning.
"Serious shock and even use approved electrical light sets only; that is, those with the Underwriters' Laboratory tag attached.
Don't leave the tree lights on when leaving the house.
Inspect the light set for any frayed, damaged or worn parts, and repair or discard them if defective.
Don't use indoor light sets for outdoor use.
Use rubber covered or thermo-plastic sheath extension cords for outdoor lighting.
SAC Slates Exams For New Students
It is fast failing to be a coincidence at Anaheim Memorial Hospitals when sisters deliver their babies on the same day, or within 24 hours of each other.
Last week the second set of sisters had their baby daughters a few hours apart. Mrs. Carl Miller, 974 S. Philadelphia, Anaheim, had her third child, by natural birth, on Nov. 25, while her sister, Mrs. Fred Liebi, 10071 Sycamore, Orange, welcomed her sixth child, this one by caesarian section, on Thanksgiving Day. Both mothers are natives of Anaheim.
This summer two Brea sisters delivered their babies within a few hours of each other on the same day and in the same week at Anaheim Memorial two sisters-in-law from Buena Park had their babies on the same day.
Additional sister acts will fail to create so much excitement, the nurses agreed.
The insulation on most Christmas tree light cords is not designed to be attached to metal of any kind," said Henning.
"Serious shock and even death could result from contact with the electrically-charged tree," Henning warned. "Even the ordinary 110 volt used in the home can be fatal, as it takes only one-tenth of an ampere, and sometimes less, to kill."
Henning also cautioned against the fire hazards of Christmas trees other than aluminum, and listed the following safety rules:
- Place the tree as far away as possible from fireplaces, radiators and other sources of heat.
- Don't place the tree where it could block exit from a room in case of fire or emergency.

Snow Driving Demands Slower Speed
Snow in the mountains spells fun for the ski enthusiast but trouble for the unwary driver, Capt. F. E. Winchell of the Anaheim area, California Highway Patrol, said this week.
"Chances are, if you're a skier, you are also a driver, since most winter sports fans drive to recreation areas," he said. "Therefore it is only common sense to learn and accept the limitations of motor vehicle operation on snow- and ice-covered roads."
"Snow driving demands slower speeds. Even if traffic stops completely, be patient; don't pull out of line only to be confronted by a stream of traffic approaching from the opposite direction.
"Starting and stopping on snow and ice require special attention," Capt. Winchell said. "Starts should be slow, since rapid acceleration results in wheel spinning. Stops should be gentle, accompanied by a soft but rapid pumping of the brake pedal. Hard, fast stops frequently result in skids.
"It takes from 3 to 12 times as far to stop on icy roads as on normal, dry pavement. Allow yourself this extra margin of room to avoid the necessity of making a rapid stop.
"If a skid starts, turn the steering wheel in the direction the back end is skidding. When the car begins to straighten out, gently pump the brakes to halt the vehicle.
"Don't forget to carry skid chains. When signs indicate that chains are required, you"
Pastor Unfolds Unitarian History
The history of Unitarianism was unfolded Sunday by the Unitarian Church of Orange County.
The history covers a European king and six U.S. presidents through the times of dozens of famous statesmen and scientists of today who were Unitarian Church members.
The Rev. Robert Lehman traced the Unitarian movement from the time of the Protestant Reformation when Michael Servetus was burned at the stake in Switzerland on orders of John Calvin for writing a book entitled "On the Errors of the Trinity."

The Rev. Robert Lehman traced the Unitarian movement from the time of the Protestant Reformation when Michael Servetus was burned at the stake in Switzerland on orders of John Calvin for writing a book entitled "On the Errors of the Trinity."
"Our Unitarian tradition of individual freedom of thought and belief has a long and honorable history," said Mr. Lehman. "In 1568, the only Unitarian king in history, John Sigismund of Transylvania, issued the western world's first edict of religious freedom. By 1600 there were more than 400 such Unitarian congregations in the surrounding area.
The cause of liberal religion was advanced in England by the powerful advocacy of such men as John Milton, Isaac Newton and John Locke. The first churches in America were founded by the discoverer of oxygen, Dr. Joseph Priestley—orthodox fanatics burned his laboratory in England.

Twenty-one new members were introduced at the meeting. Mrs. William Hutton, senior coordinator, was in charge of the initiation ceremony.
