1961 National Orange Show
Tabbed 'Citrus Wonderland'
"Citrus Wonderland" will be the theme of the 1961 National Orange Show in San Bernardino April 20 through 30, it was determined this week by judges who spent many hours poring through the more than 3000 entries.
The winning theme was submitted by Mrs. Louise Rickert, 325 La Paloma St., Redlands, and brought her the $100 first prize.
According to J. W. Snyder, chairman of the theme committee, the selection was made on the basis that the "Citrus Wonderland" theme will be "a workable one for all segments of the 46th National Orange Show, including community feaure exhibits, flower show, entertainment and commercial features and special displays throughout the grounds."
In keeping with Orange Show policy, emphasis in 1961 will be placed on expanded citrus exhibits and working demonstrations showing all phases of the state's vast citrus industry.

Gardener's Check List
By the California Association of Nurserymen
1. Prepare ground for planting bare-root roses when they arrive on the market in a fortnight or so. Work manure and bonemeal into the soil. A little extra work now means better trees later.
2. If crab grass bothered you last summer (if you had it, it bothered you), check with your nurseryman about a control to apply now.
3. Layer manure in shrub beds and let the rains work it in. Work bonemeal and commercial soil conditioners into the soil, also.
4. Winter stocks need good drainage. Be sure you don't plant them in a garden low spot.
5. Feeding a lawn in late November does a lot toward keeping it green over the winter.
Insurance Group Hits $50-Million
The Southern California general agency of Lutheran Brotherhood, fraternal life insurance society, has passed the $50 million mark in total business issued since its establishment 14 years ago.
Axel C. Lundring, Pasadena, general agent in charge, said the agency's annual production of new business increased from $136,000 in 1946 to more than $7,300,000 in 1959. Production in the first 10 months of 1960 totaled nearly $6,300,000.
August F. Kudick, 627 N. Elmwood St., Anaheim, is one of 19 district representatives associated with the agency, which currently ranks as one of the two top leaders in 1960 sales among all of Lutheran Brotherhood's 70 general agencies.

For Safe Xmas
To keep yourself and you loved ones from becoming fire victims, the National Safety Council makes these life-saving suggestions:
—Don't let gift wrapping accumulate so they become fire hazard.
—Don't smoke in bed. And holiday get-togethers, use deodorant ash trays that will hold burning cigarets securely.
—Check your Christmas tree wiring for possible shorts. Better to buy a new string of light than to risk having tragedy visit your home.
—Don't leave the Christmas tree lights burning if you away from home or out of the room for long.
—Don't put your tree up early. And don't leave it up long it gets dried out. Keep moist.
—Metallic Christmas trees are fine—if you use the floodlights most manufactur

Cover Your Spring Bulbs With Color
If you've never overplanted spring bulbs with a cover of low-growing annuals, you've missed one of spring's most delightful sights. The cover blooms with the bulbs in a combination that is something really special. When the bulbs are gone, the cover keeps blooming to hide the bareness that normally results.
This is a trick of the professional gardener which any of us can duplicate. You simply dig a bed of bulbs into the ground and plant a flat full of annuals over them. If you've already planted your bulbs, plan the cover now. The difference in planting time won't make any difference.

Buick’s double-deep trunk is a dilly—takes a lawn mower, a steamer trunk or even the bathtub if you choose!
Buick’s lean low Clean Look of Action has you fooled at first. You just can’t believe it encloses such an extra big helping of room. But there it is—room in all directions!
Room in that whale of a trunk. Room in the plush stretch of Buick’s big new Comfort Zone; wider, softer seats, deeply cushioned clear across; more head, leg and shoulder room for six passengers; wider doors, flatter floors! Room? You bet—big Buick room, and that’s saying plenty!
Blended with Buick’s new smooth-riding suspension, new Wildcat power, exclusive Turbine Drive, and handling ease, it spells new driving and riding pleasure. Maybe it sounds too good to be true but a ride in the new Buick will prove it. See your Buick dealer about taking a drive. There’s no cost or obligation. Just a lot of fun!
