IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO OWN YOUR OWN HOME—AND YOUR AMERICAN RIGHT! VISIT THESE FIRMS THIS WEEK B2—Anaheim Gazette Anaheim, Thursday, Nov. 17, 1960 Retired Teachers Enjoy Travel Talk Retired teachers of North Orange County met recently at the Methodist Church, 305 E. Broadway, Anaheim, and heard an interesting address by Glenn Lewis, who has traveled extensively in Europe. WHAT'S DOING Harvey Hendrickson, your Telephone Manager in Anaheim Maintaining phone lines is a never ending job! To keep phone lines ready for your calls, men in Telephone Patrol planes fly along hundreds of miles of phone cable nearly every day. They're on the lookout for construction work or other hazards that might damage underground or overhead lines. They warn anyone on the ground working near cables by dropping notes or calling to them over the plane's loudspeaker system. Other cable patrols on foot, in trucks and snow vehicles travel along phone lines to spot hazards before they cause trouble. It seems like a lot of work, but this is the surest way to keep your telephone service ready for you, whenever you need it. Cultivating a "telephone farm" is the unusual project of some Bell Telephone Laboratories engineers. It's an experiment with new materials for underground telephone equipment — the "plants" they've buried are pieces of wire, cable, and metals. These will be dug up periodically to see which ones are in the best condition. The "telephone farm" will help our engineers find the best materials for a faster and less expensive way to put telephone equipment underground. And it will mean another new saving to help your telephone dollar go further. A telephone installer, credited with saving an Anaheim baby from choking, was recently honored at local ceremonies. John McIntosh (left) was presented the Bell Telephone System's cherished Vail Award by R. B. Dugger, General Plant Manager, Pacific Telephone Company, for his actions that took place last March 30. He recalls working in the 1700 block of East Sycamore Street, Anaheim, when he saw a woman running from her house. She was screaming, "My baby is choking!" McIntosh met her at the sidewalk and took the baby from her arms. "I immediately put the baby over my knees, lowered her head, stuck my finger down her throat and slapped her on the back several times," he recalls. Results were instantaneous. The action dislodged a small triangular piece of brass from the baby's throat. The family doctor, Lawrence J. Peters, stated, "The prompt action of Mr. McIntosh removed the object and resulted in saving Diane Vanervelden's life." The telephone hero says much of his training that proved invaluable in the emergency was obtained through first aid courses given by his company.
