Anaheim Gazette—AS Anaheim, Thursday, Oct. 20, 1960 News About Our Service Men Army PFC Steven C. Goetting, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin L. Goetting, 1844 Haster St., Anaheim, participated with other personnel from the 99th Transportation Detachment in Operation Flash Back in Europe. The 12-day exercise ended Sept. 30. The exercise tested the efficiency of Seventh U.S. Army Support Command units under actual field conditions, and involved NATO land, sea and air forces. Goetting, who arrived overseas last April, is a helicopter repairman with the detachment in Wertheim, Germany. The former Garden Grove Union High School student entered the Army in February 1959 and completed basic training at Fort Ord. Louis G. Lingren, airman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen OC State College Expansion Slated Building plans for Orange County State College, Fullerton, revealed that by 1964 campus will have one of the largest gymnasiums in the county and the only school with two adjacent swimming pools. Stuart McComb, executive dean, explained that plans are on the drawing tables for the gym and pools with construction slated to begin by 1962. The Essex is scheduled to complete her 3½-month NATO cruise in mid-December. Billy R. Medlock, yeoman seaman apprentice, USN, son of Mrs. Alma V. Wieczorek of 729 Bywood St., Anaheim, is serving on the staff of Vice Admiral John Smith Thach, USN, commander, Anti-Submarine Defense Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet at the Ford Island Naval Air Station, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The command, commissioned on March 1, 1960, was established to formulate plans for all Pacific Fleet anti-submarine warfare and the control and protection of shipping in the Pacific Ocean. Before entering the Navy in January 1960, Medlock attended Fullerton Junior College and was employed by Cannon Electric Company in Santa Ana. Army Sergeant First Class William C. Marks, son of Mrs. Sylba B. Marks, 8932 Lincoln Ave., Anaheim, participated with other personnel from the 8th Transportation Battalion in Operation Flash Back in Europe. Anaheim Girl Is Honor Student Nancy Callaham of Anaheim is one of 88 freshmen who have been admitted to Orange Coast College with honors this semester under a new policy honoring students entering with a B or better high school average. A letter of recognition from Dr. Basil H. Peterson, OCC president, is being mailed this week to the freshmen.
