Francis Amyy Sunday classes: 6:30, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. Inquiry Classes for Catholics and non-Catholics: Tuesday evenings, 7:30. Christ asked to depict himself as a shepherd: "I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the rather known me even so know I the farmer; and I lay down my life for the sneep" (John 10:14, 15). God had a particular attention for the weak sheep as we read in the book of Ezekiel: "I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was draven away, and will bring up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick" (Ezekiel 34:10). Christ showed his love for the lost sneep in his story about the man who had a nunured sheep in the desert. He lost one and he left the ninety-nine to go and look for the one that had strayed away. When he had found it he called his neighbors to rejoice with him. Then Christ added: "I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance" (Luke 15:7). We know then who the lost or strayed sheep is; it is every sinner who has strayed away from God. At the time of Christ, the Pharisees did not associate with sinners. In fact, one day they asked Christ's disciples why he went into the company of sinners. Christ overheard the question and replied: "They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick" (Matthew 9:12). It is a sick man and not a healthy one who needs a doctor. On another occasion, when Christ was dining with Simon, the Pharisee, a "woman in the city, which was a sinner" came in. This woman began to wash his feet with her tears, wipe them with her hair and anoint them with precious ointment. To the shocked Pharisees he announced "her sins, which are many, are forgiven her for she loved much." He turned to the woman and she heard the sweetest words that a creature could ever hear from her creator: "Thy sins are forgiven" (Luke 7:48). All sinners would like to hear those consoling words In fact, one day they asked Christ's disciples why he went into the company of sinners. He turned to the woman and she heard the sweetest words that a creature could ever hear from her creator: "Thy sins are forgiven" (Luke 7:48). All sinners would like to hear those consoling words "thy sins are forgiven." We all would "for there is no man that sinneth not" (I Kings 8:46). It would seem strange that Christ, the good shepherd, who would give us the sacrament of baptism which imparts supernatural life to the soul, would not give us a visible means of restoring that life when it is lost through sin.
