IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO 88 YEARS AGO—1872 An informal meeting of the clerks of our Anaheim stores was held late Thursday evening at the office of the Fire Company at Enterprise Hall. Nearly all the stores were represented, their being present Fred Langenberger and Adolph Rimpau, with Langenberger & Co.; Frank Lafoucherie, Max Nebelung and J. E. Bryan with Heiman & George; Thomas Fauke with Calisher & Co.; Albert Rimpau with Goodman & Rimpau, and Morris Steinhart with Steinhart & Bro. A committee was appointed to call upon the merchants and we are happy to say were entirely successful in their mission. Following is the agreement signed by five firms and verbally agreed to by two others who have not signed, viz. Philip Davis & Bro. and Steinhart Bros. Agreement: We, the undersigned, do hereby agree to close up our respective places of business on Sunday, on and after the 14th of July, 1872. This agreement shall hold good until such time that if any of the undersigned intends to open on Sundays he shall notify the others, when it shall be optional with them whether to open or not.—Heiman & George, Goodman & Rimpau, Langenberger & Co., P. A. Clark, M. Calisher & Co., Anaheim, June 21, 1872. 63 YEARS AGO June 17, 1897 The annual meeting of the Fullerton Walnut Growers Association was held last week when the following directors were elected: H. G. Wilshire, Sydmer Ross, B. F. Porter, S. F. Daniels and A. T. Pendleton. The new board will meet Saturday to elect officers. Tim Carroll has served notice on E. F. Dyer, the Clarks and other owners of the Alamitos sugar factory, as well as a large number of farmers of that section, that he will hold them responsible for any damages he may sustain by infringement upon his patent beet dump. The Alamitos factory has erected some twenty-six dumps at the factory bins and Tim claims these infringements upon his patent. He may bring injunction proceedings, putting an estoppee on their use. The pupils of St. Catherin's Academy will have their commencement exercises on Thursday next beginning at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. An interesting program has been arranged. Modjeska opens her new opera house in Santa Ana tomorrow evening, the play being "Mary Stuart". She will be assisted by a company of local talent including Respective places of business on Sunday, on and after the 14th of July, 1872. A. Clark, M. Calisher & Co., Anaheim, June 21, 1872. D. W. C. Cowan, who lately arrived overland from Ione Valley, reports that the first good feed he found on the entire route was in the immediate vicinity of Anaheim. This, too, in the face of the fact that he passed through country where 30 inches of rain had fallen this year, while we had only about 10. Our enterprising friend, F. Conrad, of the California Brewery, has procured an elegant new wagon for the accommodation of the rapidly increasing business of his establishment. Senorita Tranquilina Sepulveda, sister to his honor, Judge Sepulveda, of Los Angeles, came down on Wednesday for a visit in Anaheim and vicinity. We have received the first number of the Havilah Miner. It is not large, but is neatly gotten up and well filled with interesting matter. Died, at Los Nietos, June 18. A special meeting of the Ladies' Euchre club was called last Thursday afternoon at the home of the president, Mrs. E. Brown-ing. After the business meeting the ladies were invited into the dining room where an elaborate luncheon was enjoyed. The ladies of the club were indebted to Arthur Lewis for taking them out in the tally-ho. Peter Weisel came up from the sugar factory to spend Sunday with relatives and friends. Peter tells us the factory looks elegant and everything is in tip-top shape.
