Three AUHS District Students In Competition For Scholarships Three students in the Anaheim Union High School District have been named semi-finalists in the 1960-61 National Merit Scholarship competition, according to announcements made by L. Frank Kellogg, principal of Anaheim High School, and Chester R. Shirk, principal of Western High. The students are Sharyn Bisbey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Bisbey, 1226 Chateau Ave., and a senior at Anaheim High; Stoddard Lane, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stoddard Lane Jr., 3162 Inverness Dr., Los Alamitos, and Betty Phillips, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Phillips Jr., 2631 Main Way Dr., Los Alamitos, both seniors at Western. These semi-finalists are among the 10,000 high-scoring students on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test given to over 580,000 juniors in more than 15,000 high schools last spring. The semi-finalist group is composed of the highest scoring students who now move a step closer to winning a four-year Merit Scholarship to the college of their choice. The Merit Scholarship program is now in its sixth year. It was founded in 1955 with grants from the Ford Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation and sponsors have Beginners' Bridge Classes Scheduled Instructions in the fundamentals of bridge will be offered by the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department. Classes are scheduled for the Optimist Clubhouse beginning Monday, Oct. 10, from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m., once a week for eight weeks. The basic skills of contract bridge will be taught and it will enable many players who have not mastered the art of bridge an opportunity to learn while playing. Registrations are now being taken at the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department, 309 S. Palm. Fee for the class is $4.50 for the series of eight lessons. On Sept. 4, 1954, the Navy's icebreaker Burton Island and the Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind became the first vessels to traverse the previously impassable McClure Strait, the ice-locked western entrance to the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic. semi-finalist group is composed of the highest scoring students who now move a step closer to winning a four-year Merit Scholarship to the college of their choice.
