KENNEDY, Democratic presidential nominee, receives gift of doll clad in the kind of red, white and blue candy-striped dresses worn by Kennedy-Johnson girls from Mrs. Pat Kay, designer of the dresses. Mrs. Kay gave the doll to Senator Kennedy on his recent trip to Los Angeles as a gift to the Senator's daughter, Caroline, who will be three in November. HENRY EUCHER 88 YEARS AGO June 15, 1872 Sumner Talks to IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO from the Files of The Anaheim Gazette by MRS. HENRY EUCHER 88 YEARS AGO June 15, 1872 The Masonic ball. This will be the finest ball of the season and everyone desiring to attend will do well to apply early as the number of tickets is limited. The purpose to which the funds are to be applied is one of general welfare, the building of the fine new hall now in process of construction, and it is hoped that every member and friend of the order will lend a hand to make the undertaking a financial success. Tickets may be had of any of the committee—Messrs. Pullen, Sweetzer, Korn, Wiley, Goldstein, White and Athearn. Tickets including supper. $5. A special meeting of the Anaheim Fire Company, No. 1, was held at the office at Enterprise hall, on Monday evening, June 10, for the purpose of taking steps for the celebration of the anniversary of American independence. Resolved, that the Anaheim Fire Company have a picnic at the Canada de Santiago, and further that we have a parade before the picnic, in town, the members of the fire company to appear in uniform. On motion the president appointed the following gentlemen as a committee to make the necessary arrangements and also to engage the services of the Anaheim brass band: John Fischer, Peter Richards, Louis Durr, A. W. Steinhart, and C. A. Gardner; Max Nebelung, secretary. Quite an interesting matter to scientists is the recent ascent of Mt. San Bernardino by W. A. Goodyear, of the state geological survey. Mr. Goodyear made observations and examinations from which to calculate the height of the mountain. He has not yet completed his observations at last Sumner Talks to Employees Assn. The importance of Propositions 1, 2 and 5 was the topic of Assemblyman Bruce Sumner (R-Newport Beach) who addressed the California State Employees Association yesterday in the Public Health Building in Santa Ana. Arthur Jasson, president of Chapter 53 of the CSEA, introduced Assemblyman Sumner. Proposition 1 provides for the development of water resources and for the issuance of the necessary bonds to pay the costs. Proposition 2 concerns the length of the Assembly term of office. In Proposition 5 voters are asked to decide the pay of members of the legislature. On Sept. 23 Assemblyman Sumner will go to San Francisco for a meeting of the Ways and Means subcommittee investigating higher education costs. Sumner will attend a meeting of the Assembly Judiciary Committee in Los Angeles on Sept. 20. The committee will be looking into second trust deed operations. Anaheim Democrats Hold Get-Together A get-together of precinct captains and Dollars-for-Democrats workers, and a discussion of arrangements for the local appearance of Adlai Stevenson Sept. 30 were the features of the Anaheim Democratic Club's meeting Sept. 20, 8 p.m., at the Home Savings and Loan Association building, Claudina and Center Sts. Durr, A. W. Steinhart, and C. A. Gardner; Max Nebelung, secretary. Quite an interesting matter to scientists is the recent ascent of Mt. San Bernardino by W. A. He has not yet completed his observations at last accounts, but as near as he could then tell, it is about 11,000 feet, and an adjoining peak, known as "Old Gray Back", he estimated to be about 800 feet higher. The ascent was made on Sunday last. At noon, on the top of the mountain, the weather was extremely cold, the thermometer registering 32 degrees. Frank Ganahl, of Los Angeles, announces himself as a candidate for Congress, subject to the decision of the Democratic convention. We had the pleasure of meeting yesterday Mr. George Spurgeon of Santa Ana. He reports everything looking well in that thriving town. Messrs. M. B. Craig, Jesse Davis, S. Merritt, trustees, advertise for proposals for construction of a school house at Westminster. Nathan Sears is appointed road overseer for a portion of Anaheim township and Anaheim Landing road district. Temple Beth Sholom Holds Special Rites Midnight Selichas (Forgiveness) Services were held by Temple Beth Sholom of Orange County, 206 E. Eighth St., Santa Ana. The services were preceded by a coffee at 11 p.m., in the Temple Annex. Significant Holy Day music was arranged for the service by Cantor Harvey Goldstein, who was accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Goldstein. The prayer service was conducted by Dr. Morton C. Fierman, rabbi of the Temple. increased $1000. We had the pleasure yesterday of meeting Captain Glassell of Richland who reports many new sales of land in that vicinity. A grand ball is announced for the evening of the Fourth of July at the Jones hotel, El Monte, Messrs. Lew E. Smith and Oscar George, of this city, are on the committee on arrangements. Home Savings & Loan Assoc. assets now exceed $800, setting another first in industry as it continues to save savings and loan associations nationally. The nation's largest association, Home Savings' total assets as of last Aug. 31 amounted to $815,-965,467, an 11% increase over the $736,765,710 held at the end of last year, and a gain of 19% over $685,120,927 as of the end of August 1959. Howard Ahmanson, chair of the board, reported this is a 72% greater savings gain than the association reported for the like eight months of last year. Total savings held by Home at the end of last month reached $717,391,508, representing over 250,000 savers. "Home Savings' growth is particularly significant in that it points up the increasingly important role that it and similar institutions are playing in the lives of Californians, both savers and home owners," Ahmanson said.
