Chapman College Offers Creative Writing Course
An opportunity for local writers to study and perfect techniques of creative writing under the direction of a successful, practicing writer is offered to Orange County residents through the re-appointment of Leon Z. Surmelian to the teaching staff of the Chapman Evening College, it was announced today.
Surmelian, former MGM screenwriter and a frequent contributor to "Holiday" and other national magazines, will conduct a course in Advanced Creative Writing on the Chapman College campus, 333 N. Glassell St., Orange, on Mondays, beginning Sept. 19. Two different sections are scheduled to 6 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m.
The Armenian-born writer whose first book, a volume of verse, was published in Paris when he was only 18 years old, is the author of several books, including the best-selling "I Ask You, Ladies and Gentlemen," which has been translated into 12 different languages. He recently completed his second year as Resident Writer at the Pacific Coast Writers Conference, held annually in Los Angeles.
"A writer should not be afraid to be personal, peculiar, unique, says Surmelian. "Every fictional experience is personal, directly or indirectly, and a writer should report his true feelings, no more, nor less. A writer must be honest all ways, and the writer in America like all artists, is by his very temperament and devotion a staunch defender of individual freedoms.
