If St. Paul were living today and were an American citizen, I'm inclined to think that he would like to live in an area such as ours. For ours is an area that is throbbing with life and activity and it would fit in well with Paul's own dynamic personality and his abundant spiritual energy.
Being a great man of God, and actively for God, Paul was disturbed because the Christians in the congregation at Corinth did not show the same kind of spiritual and moral activity and energy. Paul had given the Gospel to them, He had told them how Christ died and rose again to save them; how as redeemed people Christ had taken them by the hand and was endeavoring to lead them into the pathways of Godliness. Paul had preached that out of love for Christ they should walk in a newness of life, but they just were not doing so well. The congregation as such was not united; there were factions; their general conduct was below par. Paul had a genuine fear for their spiritual condition, and now was trying to rouse their conscience and awaken them to the real requirements of Christianity.
What St. Paul wrote to these early Christians also has immediate and direct application to us. Read the words of our text and the question is addressed to each of you: "Are you running well?" Are you a good competitor? Are you winning the race?
Paul was a product of his times, and in his writing and preaching he used pictures of his time. Our boys know their baseball, and their baseball players, their batting averages, and the won and lost record of leading pitchers, and so Paul knew the athletes of his day. And when Paul wanted to make clear a certain spiritual for their life—for the life with God in Christ?
This question is also addressed to every one of us. You as a Christian have a goal. You have something you must achieve. You want to win. As a Christian you've learned to know the Savior, and now you want to learn all about Him, and you need to know how to apply the love of God in Christ to yourself and to every situation in life. You want your faith in Christ to be a source of strength and an inspiration for life so that you may pattern your life after that of Christ. You want to be as He was. You want to think as He thought; to speak as He spoke; to act as He acted. But you are also aware of the weaknesses that are in you. You know that you are not all strength, but that you have also weaknesses; you may have a temper; you may speak sharply and unkindly with your tongue; you know how easily evil desires arise within you; you know how easily you can become suspicious and not put the best construction on people's motives. You know how easy it is to become unspiritual and to become absorbed in the material and temporal things of life. You know your weaknesses but you don't want to follow the impulse of your weak nature, you would rather do things God's way; you want to rise above your weaknesses to become a more mature son or daughter of God. This then is your goal. How are you doing?
As a Christian person you have also, for example, a race to run with reference to the society in which you live. You know that man was not made to live alone, but that he is a social being. You also know that you are living in a world that has so many unhappy people in it, and they are unhappy because they do not know God and the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. They have no peace through the forgiveness of
Paul was a product of his times, and in his writing and preaching he used pictures of his time. Our boys know their baseball, and their baseball players, their batting averages, and the won and lost record of leading pitchers, and so Paul knew the athletes of his day. And when Paul wanted to make clear a certain spiritual truth he often borrowed pictures from the athletic arena to illustrate his point. Today we borrow expressions from America's favorite sport, baseball. If we want to say a man was very successful we hear the comment, "He certainly hit a grand slam homer." Or if he failed we say, "He struck out." Or if a man's comments in a discussion are completely beside the point, we might hear the remark, "He's way out in left field somewhere." These are common expressions and everyone understands their meaning. And the people of Paul's day knew exactly what he was driving at when he inquired as to their success in winning the race of life. He had directed them toward the goal of a life with God through faith in Christ. And now he was inquiring whether they were really running
