News About Our Service Men FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AHTNC)—Army PFC Charles R. Presley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter L. Presley, 11642 Poes St., Anaheim, is scheduled to participate with other personnel from the 101st Airborne Division in Exercise Bright Star at Fort Bragg, N.C., Aug. 13-28. A massive airborne assault involving 30,000 troops is scheduled as one phase of the Strategic Army Corps (STRAC) exercise. This single-day mass air-drop will surpass in numbers any similar drop made during World War II or the Korean War. SAN DIEGO (FHTNC)—Luther W. Einung, electronics technician third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Einung of 1007 S. Cambridge St., Anaheim, returned to San Diego Aug. 3 aboard the destroyer USS Gurke after a six-month tour of duty with the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Far East. The Gurke participated in operation "Blue Star" off Formosa and operation "Sea Lion" in the South China Sea. Paralytic Polio Strikes Anaheim Paralytic polio this year continues to strike indiscriminately among Californians. It is reported from Berkeley, although particularly among those under the age of 15 where 75 per cent of the reported cases have occurred. A 35-year-old housewife who lives in Anaheim is the mother of seven children, ages 2 years to 13 years. The father is not in the home. About the middle of July, three of the seven children had nausea, headache, vomiting and fever. Three of the remaining children had the same symptoms but were less ill. They were seen by a physician who made a diagnosis of "flu." On Aug. 3, the mother became ill with vomitine, headache, chilliness and fever. She was ill enough to remain in bed but got un when the 13-year-old daughter became ill with the same symptoms, plus the additional symptom—double vision. The illness in both mother and daughter progressed until each had marked muscle weakness and the mother complained of severe respiratory distress. When seen by a physician on Aug. 9, the condition of both patients was so alarming that the physician called an ambulance and sent both of them to the Communicable Disease Unit, Orange County General Hospital, at once. The mother required tracheo- FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AHTNC)—Army Pvt. George B. Wilkins, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Wilkins, 2103 E. Center St., Anaheim, recently was graduated from the 82d Airborne Division Jump School at Fort Bragg. He received his parachutist wings after completing four weeks of intensive ground and aerial training which included five parachute jumps. Wilkins, who attended Anaheim Union High School, entered the Army in December 1959 and completed basic training at Fort Ord. FORT RICHARDSON, Alaska (AHTNC)—Army PFC Robert M. Duncan of Anaheim, Calif., recently participated with other personnel from Company C of the 23d Infantry in an unprecedented march over 60 miles of untracked territory on the Kenai peninsula in Alaska. Designed to test the ability of a rifle company to operate tactically BRAKES $12.95 Inc. Labor 223 S. Los Angeles PR 2-0787 Automatic Trans. Exchange 20,000 MILE GUARANTEE The mother required tracheotomy and a respirator: the daughter proved to be spinal paralytic polio without respiratory involvement. On Aug. 11, a 3-year-old boy (one of twins) was also admitted to CD with a diagnosis of poliomelitis. As of Aug. 15, the mother is still in the respirator with tracheotomy—a complete respiratory cripple, with an extremely doubtful future and with the probability that she will be a severely and permanently handicapped person! In rugged mountain and glacier country, the trek required only seven days instead of the allotted 12 days. The troops, who negotiated cliffs, streams, snowfields and treacherous glaciers, carried 60 pounds, including weapons, ammunition, crampons, ice axes, and other mountaineer equipment. The infantrymen were harassed throughout the march by attacks from a realistic enemy force which was transported by helicopter. The trek culminated when Company C crossed a 2,000-foot ridge, slid down a snowchute and captured their objective. Portage Airfield, which was defended by the acting enemy force. Duncan is regularly assigned to the company at Fort Richardson. He entered the Army in December 1958. The 24-year-old soldier, whose wife, Janet, lives at 324 E. Broadway, Anaheim, attended Fullerton Union High School. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ted I. Duncan, live at 8181 Whitaker St., Buena Park. Automatic Trans.
