Plumb stated that the majority of rejections were made because the veteran owned more property than he is entitled to under the law. A veteran may own up to $5,000 in property and still be qualified for a $1,000 property tax exemption providing he meets certain other restrictions. 52,649 veterans refiled for exemptions on property tax via the mails. Another 2,054 made per-sonal calls to the assessor's office to take exemptions which already had been established. The total number of new veterans filing this year amounted to 9,480. Exemptions also went to 67 paraplegics and amputees.
