Anaheim Gazette C-1 (Anaheim, Thursday, Aug. 11, 1900) BTK A Tradition of Community Service It has been more than three quarters of a century since the establishment of this institution; a period of constant expansion and modernization to keep pace with the growth of Orange County. During those years the owners and staff of Backs, Troutman & Kaulbars have always been active participants in the church, civic, and fraternal affairs of the community. It is our intention to maintain this tradition of community service. It is a word that suggests the highest praise, describing something that has really made it. Obviously, a cool tea party calls for a cooling drink. There is nothing cooler, in either the conventional or the teen-age sense of the word, than a tall glass of iced tea. When you make it with lestea, the 100% pure instant tea, it's even cooler—still in both senses of the word. In terms of temperature, this tea is the coolest of all possible teas because it dissolves instantly in cold tap water. You can make instant iced tea anywhere there's a water supply in just 15 seconds—on the porch or at the picnic grounds—without ever going near a stove. And you can regulate its strength exactly to your taste; a rounded teaspoon to a glass of water makes average strength instant tea, but just add a little more or a little less if you like your tea some other way. In terms of teen-agers, Nestea is cool because it's an easy, do-yourself drink that pleases the whole gang and fits in with a cooperative party. Somebody brings the rolls, somebody also brings the hamburger meat, somebody brings the cake, and so on—and the hostess provides a big pitcher of tea. That lets the hostess off with an easy assignment, because she can make a pitcher of instant tea in seconds. Besides the refreshments, what else does it take to make a cool tea party? Records, of course. And, like the refreshments, the records should be provided cooperatively. Let every guest bring a new favorite. That way, each member of the party will get a chance to hear what he likes best. If the group feels like dancing. Anaheim Campus BYU Buys Acreage For College Site A 135-acre site has been purchased in Anaheim by the Brigham Young University in Utah, for a full four-year college. Negotiations for the site, reported to cost some $1½ million, have been in progress for more than a year. The college site is on Euclid Ave., north of La Palma Ave., near the Lutheran hospital. According to reports, the school would be a two-year college at first, eventually a full four-year coeducational institution. According to state standards the area is small for a college, since state colleges require a minimum 320 acres for a college campus site. However, most authorities deem it quite adequate for a small private college. Social Security Benefits Soar In the past year 38,377 people in Orange County received social security benefits at an annual rate of $29.6 million dollars. This is a 12 per cent increase over February 1959, according to Ralph Dillman, manager of the Santa Ana social security district office. Nationally almost 14 million people receive benefits exceeding $10 billion. In 1940 there were only 200,000 beneficiaries. FIERMAN Temple Beth Sholom of Orange County Each year marks the passing of time, and the passing of time brings to us reflections, mourn and earnest, touching life, its meaning. As goal and all its strange vicissitudes. One question among many is induced in our minds by these reflections. How shall we measure life? By what rule shall we gauge it? Shall we measure life by the number of years a man has lived—shall we measure by time? Does it necessarily mean that we can size up of the life of a man by the mere enumeration of the days, weeks, months and years he has spent on this earth. The size of a canvas does not determine the value of a painting, nor does the number of our years determine the worth of our life. If we are to think of life merely in terms of time, we are likely to be saddened by the prospect as we grow older. For on the sunny side of the hill of life, on the up-grade, time brings with it anticipation, joy, ambition—youth, out on the shadowy side of the hill, on the down-grade, time brings with it, as often as not, frustration, disillusionment, sorrow, old age. "And the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say: And the grinders cease because they are few. And those that look out shall be darkened in the windows." In poetic imagery the book of Ecclesiastes describes the gradual decline of the human body, the weakening of its limbs and organs and faculties, as it moves onward through the years upon the journey of life toward the ineluctable—the inscrutable end. It is true that time teaches us wisdom. Time softens sorrows, subdues passions and oftentimes brings peace to the restless soul. But time also wears all things down, robs us of the which zest of living, teaches us what we cannot do, and brings us at last, spent and wearled, to the gates of death. And what does human life amount to after all, when taken as time? It is amazingly insignificant. The whole life of man is less than a second in the cosmic calendar, less than a point on the chart of time. How then shall we measure life? Shall we how many are the people who have set their goal so high, that it would take them more years than are apportioned to them in life to reach it. Within certain limits, ambitions and aspirations are healthy and normal. Ambition as such should not be curtailed. The excessive amount of yearning that makes for unpleasantness when the goal is not reached—that is the ambition that destroys men. It is he ambition that eats into the soul when not fulfilled. Just to make one's fellowman jealous, to build up one's ego, to reach higher than the sky so that one will have the acclaim of people. No, that is not what we want. The story is told by the author, Granville Hicks, of a man he knew who was inordinately poor when he was young. This boy lived in a three-room house with his family. During the course of years his ambition to own many homes—one in the country, and one in the city was fulfilled. He became a financial success. But he was bored. His town and country homes were of no use to him. He became tired of them. So he bought a yacht, and set sail for a year's cruise around the world thinking that he might find surcease from his boredom. But half way around the world he became tired of the yacht and headed for the States. When he came home he looked around for a place in which to live. He considered his country home—it was too far away from the big city, and too quiet. He thought about his town house—it was too large and the noise of the traffic on the busy thoroughfare prevened him from sleeping. Tired of it all, he rebuilt the three-room house in which he was born and lived there until the end of his days. What then is the true measure of life? Not time. Not things. Is it happiness? Are we to say that the man who has been most happy has received more out of his existence? What is happiness? Is it contentment, ease of mind—complacency? Then we must say that the self-satisfied soul, the most stolid, the most unimaginative, the bovine temperaments would have to be accounted for the most happy. For these as a rule are the most complacent and satisfied. But are we truly inclined to concede this? Shall we say that those whose souls are timed to a It is true that time teaches us wisdom. Time softens sorrows, subdues passions and often-lines brings peace to the restless soul. But time also wears all things down, robs us of the rich zest of living, teaches us what we cannot do, and brings us at last, spent and wearied, to the gates of death. And what does human life amount to after all, when taken as time? It is amazingly insignificant. The whole life of man is less than a second in the cosmic calendar, less than a point on the chart of time. How then shall we measure life? Shall we measure it by possessions? Shall we measure it by the amount of money we have accumulated, the number of houses we own, the choice foods we are able to buy, the collection of beautiful clothes we have? Most of us who strive after material success do so not because we regard it as life's highest good, and the true criterion of life's worth. Rather do we seek it in order to acquire by means of it other, and to us more valuable ends—security, independence, power, the respect of our fellowmen, and a chance to play a role in this world. Some people do think of wealth as life's greatest good. In their estimation, life is summed up in rich appointments, beautiful homes, and expensive jewelry. The wise man pities them. Man does not require much to be happy. It is his passionate striving after the things he can't reach that the root of his unhappiness lies.
